The Dentist

I am VERY afraid to go to the Dentist! Just to have my teeth cleaned. Excellent dentist. My teeth are straight and white. Spent a lot of money when younger and now I can’t imagine someone scraping my teeth!!! The imagined sensation in my head makes me cringe! Does anyone have this fear now since brain aneurysms clipped?

My dentist keeps wanting to put implants into my jaw, but since my craniotomy, I don’t want anyone doing anything to my head.

David Andrus, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada

I had a childhood dentist who left me rather scarred about going to a dentist, so I really do not like to go. However, as with all things, regular check-ups I try and maintain. I also had my aneurysm clipped; however, I have not had weird sensations in my head when I have gone. I have had a crown put in, a filling done and cleanings over the years, and find it is the dentist more than the procedure which makes the difference in how I feel.

Good luck to you!

Thank you to everyone who answered my message about being afraid of the dentist. God bless

yes. but made it thru and not like I feared

So sorry you are worried. I don't like the dentist but I LOVE my dentist, contradictory I know but just express your fears. They will do everything they can for your comfort.

Hi Vicki,

I have always had a fear of the dentist, and it has nothing to do with the fact that I had a ruptured aneurysm almost eight years ago. It stems back to being a child and having a scary dentist who was anything but kind. My teeth are so sensitive that they would ache for up to three days after a cleaning. In fact, I would have my dentist clean my teeth, since I could not tolerate the pain involved with having the dental hygienist do them. My wonderful dentist offered to give me Novocain so he could scrape my teeth successfully----what a miracle. I now do not dread my six-month cleaning. I will be forever thankful to this wonderful professional who has made my life easier. Is this an option for you? God bless.

Sharon, good idea I will ask my dentist about the novocain!!!

Maybe not from the dentist but when I used a electric tooth brush my head vibrated, it was strange but I suppose I had not used one for a while and forgot what it was like.

Indeed, just a month before my annie burst I had to have a root canal and the consequences were different than any root canal I'd had before. I had pain with it for a while, I relate all that now to the beginning of the burst annie. I did not know I had an aneurysm, I knew my molars and sinuses were very close together and I had constant sinus infections and migraine like pain. It's like the ears roaring now, I feel sure it is related to the annie and the coiling, but the ENT doc says there is no evidence of that. Perhaps the only thing in common is timing, but there sure have been a lot of odd things happening in the "head space" before and after the burst annie, for sure. Apologies for rambling, just my wandering logic looking for reasonable connections. Blessings to you all! :D

Wow! Very interesting. I had similar symptoms before my 3 aneurysms. I also have a 4th unruptured one that they couldn’t clip or coil. Maybe I’m afraid of the dentist because of that unruptured one.

I had a dentist who did not believe in giving novacain, he just said to be a "good soldier". I had many molars' enamel affected due to the drugs and high fever when I had pneumonia as a child. All these teeth were so sensitive and had to be treated as if a cavity. I really think he was afraid of giving shots! He certainly was not afraid of inflicting pain with the drill! Thankfully most dentists now are very sensitive to anything they do being painful and go out of their way to insure anything they do does not cause you discomfort. I still think the best way to get me to the dentist is take me there unconscious and bring me home the same way, so I do not know I have even gone!

Amazing!

I have awful teeth, despite my constant work toward keeping them healthy. Needed a crown which turned into a root canal. My neurologist would not sign off on the nitrous (the Novocain wasn't enough for me) so I had to go under and have the tooth pulled. Every time I go in to the dentist I pray I won't need another cavity filled. Being on the novocain makes my head feel so awful. I have one anny clipped and one unruptured. The dentist is my absolute least favorite place to sit. Good Luck!

At first it was a fear, but when I actually went it wasn't too bad. Fear dissipates with time.

Hello Vicki, sorry you are anxious. I am actually a dental hygienist. When you go just explain to them what you went through, and ask if they have oraqix, it is a topical agent that “numbs” your teeth. Just try to relax, I know it’s eager said then done. The other thing you could try is to take your ear phones and listen to music, it may drown out the sound of the instruments. Good luck

Perfect!!! Jamie!!! Thank you!

I had 2 clippings on the right side. I had the same fear. Even the X rays they did the panoramic ones scared me to death. I took Xanax before I went and it relaxed me a lot. I told the dentist a short version and explained to him about my anxiety and he said that they can give you valium at the office if you need it. I went th rough my work extremely well. Lots of people don’t like to take meds but my anxiety level was so high I actually started crying but everything went really well. Next time I go I think will be a lot easier. Just tell the dentist and he or she will.work with you I am sure. Good luck.

Thank you! Great ideas and will do!
