May need another PED

Had a pipeline placed in 2013 and the aneurysm never fully occluded. Last year it was leaking just a bit and the surgeon thought it was because the stent had not completely epithelialized. Had another follow up angiogram today and now he thinks it is a different problem…that it is leaking out at one end of the stent and he needs to place another stent adjacent to the old one. Anyone else have anything like this happen? I am so bummed…

You seem to have the exact problem I had. Had my first PED done in 2013, and a year later had another inserted with no problem at all after that. Follow up angiogram and MRAs show that there is no further leakage and all’s well. Was prescribed 325 mg aspirin daily for the rest of my life.

Same problem here!!! First PED on 4/15, and it didn't occlude. Need a second stent and hope that will take care of the problem!! Anna did you have the same recovery for the second surgery as you did for the first one?? I feel like it would be riskier as the second stent has to go through the first one and the space is not very big!! Where is your aneurysm? So glad to hear that your second surgery took care of the problem!!!

I am so upset to hear this news. This was done at Hopkins? After the initial PED and you went back it had not occluded? How did they know it was leaking. We all are interested, I am sure. How many angiograms have you had.
Your friend, Denise

I am now curious too....mahoneybirdie, was it done at Hopkins? Who is your surgeon? Mine was done in Indy, but I was going to have the repair done at Hopkins, but they had to reschedule several times, and now the surgeon who invented the PED (one of inventors) is coming to my hometown to help and he agreed to help with my procedure, so I will have the second stent placed then. Mine has a small remnant which was seen at the 6 month angio, and 12 month MRA. I was told that they really should have used 2 stents due to my aneurysm shape/size/location.

Good luck NL, Dr Coon at Hopkins did mine and I had all the confidence in him. I email him with questions and he emails me back.

Hi NL & Denise,
I hope I can put your minds at ease when I tell you that insertion of the second PED seemed to be a piece of cake for my surgeon who, up to the time of my initial procedure, had done about 12 in his career when it was first used. He reassured me that it was going to be successful and explained that what he was doing was “extending” the first PED to cover the very small leak that remained. Recovery was fast and another angiogram was performed three months after the second PED. My annie was in the right ICA. Good luck to you both.

Thank you SO much for the information, Anna!!! It is great to hear that all went so smoothly, and not worse than the first surgery. Very happy for you, and thanks again!!

Denise H. that is who was going to do my procedure. Long story, but now it will be Dr Nelson from NYU, here in Indy. I have lupus and some kidney issues, and having it at home where my other specialists are will be easier, so I lucked out that he happened to be coming here when I had to cancel the one with Dr Coon at JH. So happy that all went well, and that you are doing great!

Sorry I didn't see this sooner, but on the main wall I posted some info about myself - I too had to have more extensions, but my first was four to begin with telescoped together, with two more added on the same day! I went back for 2 more after it was leaking, minimally, less than a year later. That second surgery was a breeze compared to the first! So I have 8 total telescoped together and all is well now.

hi Mahoney Birdie,

Would you mind sharing where your aneurysm was located and how large it was? Do you know what kind of PED was used? How did you find out it was leaking, did you have any symptoms?

Thanks
