Recovery

hi all. i know everyone is different but i had my ruptured aneurysm on 30th Jan 2014 so still recovering but doing well. i seem to have a pattern of one good day one bad day. i wanted to know if anyone has experience of these electric shock type pains in bottom of back and bottom? some days i can’t walk sit or lay im so uncomfortable!

Hi Kelly...You are very early in the Healing journey...sometimes it takes and entire year for one to know their "new normal"... I saw someone else write this once a while ago...so I am hoping others will come out and give you some advice... What procedure did you have? Coiling, Clipping, PED, Etc.,

I was coiled and donot remember having electric shock in back and bottom, but had the shock in my right eye and face...hope you get a bunch of responses...~ Colleen

thanks for replying. i had coiling too. i find where im still in early stagesdoctors don’t give answers well suppose they can’t tell me what my future is. I get forgetful and come out with silly things then think to myself why did i say that! i have trouble with my eye sight mostly right eye which im waiting for hospital appointment. my balance isn’t great and right side co ordination sometimes isn’t good, it took me 2 attempts to pick something up yesterday. (not that im complaining could of been a lot worse.) i am a little frustrated and like you say suppose im coming to terms with it all and my new life im still tearful too.

Hi Kelly, I had mine on Jan 27th. So not too much before you. Luckily, my eye sight went back to normal but they said it can take months. I am frustrated as well, but we both had the same rupture and coiling we are blessed to still be here! I guess it's all about being patient now.

hi Laura yes we are lucky. i think that’s another reason i get frustrated because i know how lucky i am and shouldn’t be feeling down but i do. i think i want to be back to how i was taking my children to school and doing all the mummy things and i just can’t at the moment. still getting bad head aches are you? im being to impatient i think.

Yes I feel the same way that I want my life to be back to normal too. I have constant headaches still my DR is having me get a CT scan this week to make sure it's nothing else going on. He said that the headaches are normal after a brain bleed though.

Hey Kelly! I had a subarachnoid hemorrhage on January 17th (2014) so we are not far apart from each other. I don't remember much about the whole thing. I'm responding to your post because I had HORRIBLE pains in my bottom! It wasn't like an electric shock but more like a dull ache/sciatic sensation. It hurt more than the headaches! Mine went away after a couple of weeks and many hot baths/heating pad sessions. I have no idea what caused the discomfort though. I'm glad you are recovering and YES there are good and bad days for sure!!

p.s. I had a pipeline stent procedure, then another this past Monday for an unruptured aneurism on my carotid artery. I know how you feel about the children too. I miss being actively involved in their lives (two daughters 16 and 9 and a son who is 6). I was watching old videos this morning and I was laughing/playing with them.....seems like a different lifetime ago! :0(

I had terrible sciatic pain, that could be it. It was crippling, and the main reason I go to physical therapy. I’ll also go to my chiropractor once I stop sleeping so much.

Laura

What type of medication does he have you on for the headaches?
Joe

They sent me home from the hospital 3 weeks ago with Norco so that is what I take at night to curb the pain. During the day I take Advil or Tylenol. The norco works, but also makes my stomach sick.

aw bless that’s what pulls at my heart strings the most! but that’s what will make us get well pretty quick too  thanks for the reply at least im not alone or going mad…others are having the same symptoms.

yes im wondering if it is that its more on one side and down one bum cheek. I’ll mention it when i go back to my out patient appointment. thanks for reply.

Hi Kelly,

When i was released from the hospital after having an sah/coma/coil for 6 weeks...i'll tell you what, if i had a headache i wouldn't have been able to tell you because the pain in my lower back/shooting down the back of my legs was enough to stop the world as far as I was concerned...it was like the Sciatic nerve from hell had settled in and didn't go away for about a year . No explanation what so ever from the docs either, and in fact they seemed to think it had nothing to do with my aneurysm. I've since found out that this happens fairly frequently to others who've endured troubles with encephylitus/shunts/fluid not circulating correctly, etc. I've found this out from other Survivors, not the doctors. Exersise and walking uphill helped with my pain the most i found, and one day the pain simply vanished. Not fun !

Best of luck to you,

Peace, Janet

thanks Janet. im finding out a lot more from peoples experiences than the doctors… im glad though coz started wondering if it was something else but hearing other peoples stories and the timing of it its got to be related. take care

Hi, Kelly. I just saw your post. Yes! I experienced lots of pain in my low back, sacrum, and down both legs! It was awful, I could hardly sit. The pain was so bad, similar to sciatic nerve pain. That would explain the “electric shock” sensations (nerve pain).
I spoke with my docs. I hope I can explain it like they did to me…the blood from the bleed in your head traveled by way of the cerebral spinal fluid to your lumbar, low back region, and settled there. The settled blood cells irritate the nerve endings and the result is pain. Mine lasted for a few weeks. Wishing you the best in your recovery! =) Teresa

Sorry, Janet. You are sooo right! The pain was intense! So glad it went away after a while. See my recent post for an explanation. =). Teresa

thanks Teresa, yes that’s it!! I’ve started doing a bit of walking and its helping. the other day trying to shave my legs or put socks on or shoes was painful…its easing thankfully, wish you well

Teresa,

My hubby and I were talking about this again last night, particularly that docs had no answer but that it was an issue with some on this board so it must be a common phenomenon. I hypothesized the same thing your doc said....that blood must've gotten into the spinal column somehow! Mine is completely gone now thank goodness!!

Yes, it is interesting how most often we have to research post symptoms on our own. I recall feeling like an absolute lunatic. I thought, why in the world would I have a brain bleed and yet my low back hurts? I thought the bed had somehow messed my back up. I even asked my husband to buy me one of those egg crate mattress pads to put on the hospital bed.
It is sometimes like fumbling around in the dark. I’d mention an odd complaint, something that I would have no idea would be related to my recovery. The doc would say, “oh yeah, that’s normal and to be expected.” Sure would have been nice to know! =
I have learned a few things during my recovery. Something I learned last summer I thought was very interesting. Symptoms of depression can be a side effect of a ruptured a/SAH. Apparently, the hemoglobin portion of the red blood cells (from the bleed) irritate the cerebral cortex. The side effect can be a change in mood that mimics depression. Actually, I think I learned that on one of the webinars on the BAF site. I was feeling so “blue” and just couldn’t seem to shake it. Just definitely, not myself. When I learned that, I felt so much better for some reason. The webinar mentioned some docs prescribe a mild antidepressant before the patient is discharged from the hospital, because depressive symptoms are so common and are to be expected. Again, if I had known to anticipate those symptoms, I wouldn’t have suffered in silence; thinking something was wrong with me. =)
