Question re:birth control/screenings and family history

Hello all!

Just found this group/site and had some questions I’m hoping you all may help me with…I have a significant family history of aneurysms. I’ve lost a grandmother and last year (2012) an aunt, and another aunt had two aneurysms clipped this summer and an uncle with an unclipped one. (for those keeping score that’s three of my mothers four siblings.).

I’ve had my MRA and, thankfully, no leaky brain here. That said I was just reading an article about the link between young women, strokes, and birth control pills. I’m 35 and other than my family history I don’t have any other risk factors. My doctor was unconcerned, but should I discontinue anyway?

Also, I’ve read on this site that the foundation recommends screening for folks with my history every 5-10 years. My doc said you are either born with one or have a trauma that leads to one. Due to migraines I had an MRI about 7 years ago and so she was ok with me getting another because we couldn’t find the records, weren’t sure if it was an MRA or an MRI so “if it would make me feel better”… But my guess is in a few years (assuming I haven’t bonked my head) she won’t think I need one.

Thoughts?

Whew. That’s a lot! Lol basically I’m just wondering if I should get a second opinion, or ?!?!

I don't know that you are ever born with one. I was told by my neurosurgeon that all of my kids should be screened as well as my siblings. I am not sure how often they should be screened. Someone else could probably answer that question better than me, but I think I would go for a 2nd opinion. I had an MRI 10 years ago and it didn't show an aneurysm, yet I had to have one clipped in September 2012. He also, recommended that my mom be screened, if anything just to show if it is on both sides of my family or just my dad's side. My aunt had 2 that were never repaired, because she was dying from stomach cancer.

Definitely not necessarily something you are born with. I think you can be, but many develop later in life. My neurosurgeon did not recommend getting off birth control, even though I have a small aneurysm. So I don’t think you need to unless you have cardiovascular issues. Talk to your ob/gyn too for guidance. Best wishes.

Hi, they can develop at any time you are not necessarily born with them, my neurosurgeon said my children and siblings should be screened every 5 years, from the age of 20.

My neurosurgeon told me not to take the pill whilst I waited for op on another aneurysm but that is because you have to come off it for operations. However after it was operated on I was allowed back on it. I am now on depo after having my two children ( both after sah ). Jess.xxx
