Newly diagnosed basilar tip aneurysm

Last week I was told that an incidental finding on my MRI was a wide necked 4mm aneurysm of the basilar tip. Does anyone know if this is likely to be treated. I am 53 and a heavy smoker.

Also on the MRI report it says "scattered hyperintensities on T2WI within the deep white matter likely reflect underlying microangiopathic disease"

Can anyone help me with this. I have long term major depressive disorder treatment resistant and sever anxiety and I am struggling with this diagnosis, I am much less anxious if I know all the ins and outs of everything.

Looby, welcome to the BAF support site. We're glad that you found us, but it's a shame that you too have received this diagnosis. I'm one of the few people here who has no experience with aneurysms (I am a moderator on another board, and I come here to help out), but you might try using the search feature, which is at the very top of the page on the right. (It's very small and easy to miss.) Start by keying in "basilar" and you will get leads to discussions which may be of interest.

There is some excellent information that you can access by clicking on BAF WEBSITE in the links just below the page header. There's a lot of information there.

The MRI report language that you ask about is highly technical, and you may not find anyone here who can interpret it for you. Have you discussed it with your GP? That is the person who is most likely going to be able to interpret this for you.

This is a very anxiety-filled time for you. The good people here are no strangers to the anxiety of a diagnosis like this. Here (just click on that) is a thread from earlier this year which might be of interest to you. I hope that, over time, you will find some supportive friendships here.

Looby, I’d step in the boat with ModSupport. Do a search. Start making a list of everything you need or want to ask the doctor. These questions you posted are a great start. On the list put your concerns down and have the doctor answer in ways you and your family can understand. Do you have someone to go to the doctor with you? Have you an appointment date to see a specialist? You may be interested in joining the UK Group for a little more support. Keep us posted.

Thanks, where is the UK group?
