Post clipping surgery support

Hello, thank you for welcoming me in this community.

My mother had a ruptured aneurysm Friday 7th march, but was not correctly diagnosed till Friday 14th march (she was sent home by two doctors with a set of blood pressure medicine during the week).

She had her clipping surgery Monday 16th march and everything went well. The doctors said that she had 30% chance of survival and 90% chance of hemiplegia and they asked us to pray that everything goes well the weekend before the surgery as they can not do anything due to the high risk of vasospasm and strokes.

No complications happened before, during or after the surgery. Everything went fine and she was able to wake up and talk few minutes after the surgery. She walked but with help three days after and She was sent home a week later (Monday 24th). Now everything seems fine, but she has some minor memory problems (especially days and time); however, she is becoming very energetic and sometimes says thinks like she does not care anymore (which is the total opposite of her personality before the surgery). I am not sure if I we should worry about this and if we should expect any other complications. This is the very first time we hear about this condition and everything is so new to us.

I am not sure what was the exact size of the aneurysm but two clips of 11mm and 7mm were used.
Thank you very much for your support.

Good Morning Selma, thanks for posting! Personality changes can be quite normal after a rupture. Blood gets into places that it’s not designed to be in, primarily the Subarachnoid Space (SAH for short) which causes damage to the brain. Your mom will heal, it just takes a lot of time. Make sure she stays hydrated it’s very important for our brains to heal, as is protein. The WHO recommends 120gms/day whilst the USA says 90gms/day the last I checked. I was told it’s ok to go over but not under.

I read your other post first and didn’t realize she was already home, call her doctor about the swelling. It will be faster I think than waiting for someone who’s had a craniotomy to respond. Our members cover the globe, so it can take awhile. Please let us know what the doctor says, sharing our experiences is how we all learn!
