My 73 yr old healthy ,active Mom suffered a brain aneurysm on April 8,2012. She had 3 surgeries, including coiling and open craniotomy . She is still in the neuro ICU,finally becoming somewhat awake & aware this week. Can respond to some commands& seems to recognize us.Too weak to write or talk. This has been such a shock to our whole family. My Mom's Dad died of an aneurysm @ age 51 & just found out through a distant relative that HIS mother died @ 68 from "cerebral hemorrhage". If I had realized this I would have insisted Mom get tested, should she have been anyway, with her father's history? I know now my sisters& I should be tested very soon.Looking for support & information.Thank you, Diane
Prayers for your mom!!
Hello Diane, You came to the right place, you will find alot of support & information here also. Stay strong I know how difficult it is to see your mother go through all this. My mother also suffered from a ruptured brain aneurysm last July at the age of 61 but with the help of great neurosurgeons and alot of faith she is doing great now almost back to her old self again. Sending your mother my prayers and Im glad your deciding to go get tested. Big Hug*
Thank you Amy !!
Thanks so much , Araceli, for your prayers & hugs. She has been blessed with wonderful neurosurgeons& neuro ICU nurses. This has been such a shock & she has been so critical...I just want my precious Mom back with our family. So glad you Mom has made a good recovery, that is very encouraging ! *hugs*
Hi Diane...I think it is to late to wonder if mom should have been tested or not...it is what it is at this point...but you and your sisters can get tested and possibly have options...Gotcha all in my Thoughts Colleen
hi diane,
sorry to hear about your mother...she sounds like a strong woman and with love and support from her loved ones will get thru this..shes already made it thru the worst part..i had a ruptured anny when i was 41with no family history..my children were 21 and 16 at the time..i thank god everyday for making it thru the horrible experience, its life changing to be in touch with ones own mortality. my drs suggested i get my children tested so i did and it gives me such a sigh of relief knowing hopefully by Gods grace they do not have to go thru what i did,,,i guess what i'm saying is i would def suggest getting an mri for you and your siblings..heck even your cousins since it runs as far back as your grandparents..its alot better to catch an anny b4 it ruptures,,God bless and keeping your mom in my prayers..
Diane, welcome....and, my personal opinion is that you should be tested...
One of my friends (female) lost her dad some time back ,and one son, two years before hers ruptured...
Many others, over time, have shared their famly history...
Prayers you will get lots of responses...
Pat
Hi Michelle, thanks for the kind words & encouragement. My Mom is very strong & already showing signs of being frustrated. She hates being"sick" or in bed. As soon as the dust settles a bit , I am getting my MRI. Have passed on all the info & this site to my sisters & cousins& my Mom's 1 brother. Hope they all do follow through....it is a horrible experience, and as I have found out , many do not survive to the hospital. Prayers for everyone out there going through this.....
Hi Pat......as you can see by my above comment ,I will get tested and have passed on the info to all involved. Thanks for the prayers....
glad to hear diane,
i can understand what your mothers feeling, we women are like the rock of our familys and speaking for myself..didnt think that i could ever succumb to something so life threatening..but it def helped me to reevaluate how to live my life and savour every little moment...so its a very bad thing to happen but you come out of it a better person in the end..ttyl and tell your mom shes got other survivors praying for her
Hi Diane, I was 65 Yrs. old when I had a ruptured aneurysm. i was in ICU for a month in which I had coiling done.
Don't remember to much of what happened in the hospital, but was told it was pretty scary when I didn't remember my family members. Then in Sept, 2011 I had more surgery in which they insert a stent & added 3 more coils, making the total of coils 29. Went back for my last 6 month checkup & was finally told everything looked good. Try to keep the faith & you are in my prayers. I have learned alot since my annie & will say its a life changing experience for everything close to you. But each day it gets alittle better. Still in alot of therapy but that is mainly for the stroke that I suffered in 2011. You all will be in my thoughts.
Aggie
Thank you so much for you message, Jo, and I am so sorry about your Mom's passing. I am so glad to hear you had her for 14 years after the aneurysm. I am keeping the faith and gaining strength & knowledge from the caring people on this site.
I plan on being tested and will deal with what is found then.It has to be better than the tragedy of a rupture. My heart also goes out to you and your family with your loss and what you have been through.
Hugs, Diane
Hi Aggie....thanks for your note and encouraging message. Holding on to the thought that each day will get a little better for Mom, and for all of us.Hanging onto the faith & hope. Thanks for the good thoughts and prayers, they really do help.
Hugs, Diane
Hello all....an update on my Mom ( Dotty) ...she is making some progress and was just moved out of the Neuro ICU to a neuro step down unit. She is becoming more awake& aware. Does know us & respond to basic commands.Still can not speak as a trach is still in place, but seems like she is trying to. Still too weak to attempt writing. Seems frustrated, as expected, and I guess this is good, as much better than no response! They have started PT & OT , but she seems extremely weak & it is more passive than active at this point. Not sure what to expect , it has been one month. Hoping and praying she continues to improve. Thanks to you all for the prayers & support......Diane
