Fun and work

“The only time fun comes before work is in the dictionary.” - a version of a quotation by Vince Lombardi

When I was teaching full time, I would sometimes say this to my class. It was always met with a groan or an eye-roll. Although this quotation is not from a movie, one time they bet me I wouldn’t be able to go an entire day without quoting from a film. If I lost, every student would get a homework pass; I didn’t even make it through the morning. Either way, I bring up my version of the quote (Lombardi had substituted success for fun) because it’s still relevant during recovery. Adjusting can still be overwhelming at times, and though I can hear my former students groaning, the quote is applicable. We don’t have control over whether things become “fun.” However, most of the time, we have to put in the work first.
