Eleptriptan: Is it safe for headaches after TIA?

My girlfriend is living with a basilar aneurysm since last August. She has improved since the first episode in August, but has in the last 2 months had progressively more and more headaches and dizzy spells. She has been in the ER 2 times in the last 30 to 45 days. The last one was diagnosed in the ER as a TIA. The Doctor there advised her to take a baby aspirin daily.

Her regular Doctor has prescribed Eletriptan {Relpax 20mg} the warning label says to talk to the Doctor if you have any of a bunch of conditions, including TIA.

Has anyone taken this med? If so what for? I am afraid for her to take this. Just from what I have read about it. Thanks

Has your girlfriend had surgery on her basilar aneurysm...? The reason I ask, is my basilar brain aneurysm was coiled and one of my effects from the coiling is headaches...

Also, I think it is so good to be proactive in our health and medicine's...but I am not sure we are qualified to say if this medicine is safe or not...Hopefully, someone here may be taking this med and can help...

Lastly, have you questioned this med with the Doctor... ie., med vs. TIA...~ Please keep us posted...we do learn so much from each other... Thoughts your way ~ Colleen

I had to look this up...but maybe this will help you out...it is here at BAF ..."Ask the Doctor?"

Click on last page and ask your question...just know it may take a few days until you see an answer ...

no they say because of its shape it is very risky to operate. Her doctor who had just seen her after the TIA prescribed it.

Thanks did it.

hi reynoldsmex- find out first- call the drs or the pharmacist-my dr prescribed naproxen and that's a big no no when your on Coumadin, is there another dr in the group you can talk to? I check one against the other, well take care, good of you to be concerned! keeping you in thoughts and prayers~

Hi,

Sorry to hear about ur girlfriend. I have not heard of this med however I have been told since I had vasospasms I can not take any of the "triptan" family of drugs. I read somewhere you are in New Mexico not far from Arizona. I would possibly look into the barrow neurological institute. Maybe there is drs there that do pro bono work? I would definitely ask for a second opinion.

If her Doctor isn't a Neurologist you might want to encourage her to see one. My wife takes a Maxalt MLT which is in the same family class as Relpax but she finds Maxalt to work much better. Relpax is usually a first line drug suggested by prescription insurance. The baby aspirin would concern me because while it is not a blood thinner it does make platelets less sticker. Although I am not a Doctor, I believe it would be contraindicated because if a rupture were to occur, bleeding in the brain by the vessel could be perfuse and not allow a resealing which normally occurs upon rupture. If a rupture occurs, the time clock starts a seventy-two hour window in which a second more devastating rupture is likely to occur. That is why I encourage you to suggest she meet with a Neurologist and possibly a Neurosurgeon so as to avoid a initial rupture altogether. I've been down this road with my wife so I know the consequences.
