CDL drivers?

Hiya folks! Hope everyone's healing process is going smoothly. So here's one of many dilemmas: my husband has a cdl.

We moved to Arizona from Michigan last September, and haven't updated our licenses yet due to cost. Now, at 44, my husband is recovering from a subarachnoid hemmorage due to aneurysm, and I'm not sure if this disqualifies him from having a CDL at all. (It really wouldn't be any big deal if he did lose it, it was for an old job...)

There's no slurring or loss of vision; as far as we can tell, it's only some short-term memory loss, which would keep him from driving anyway. But the doctors are still certain that this is only an temporary side effect of the surgery.

Any CDL drivers out there who know whether this keeps him from renewing his CDL out here?

Amber, welcome...and hope you are enjoying AZ...

Have the doctor(s) offered to write a letter of recommendation?

You can AZ DOL online and pull up CDL info and/or call their office...

Other sites: www.iovs.org and www.arvo.org on driving...

Has your husband had his vision fully checked and /or seen a neuro-oph?

Best wishes for your decisions...

Pat

Hi Amber,

I know that in California, thats one thing you don't want to do is let the Motor Vehical Dept. know about anything that could compromise ones driving ability -- its a sure fire way to NOT get a license renewed at all, cdl or regular class C or Class B. what have you. Your husbands ability to drive is something I would hope he is aware of, shortcomings or not, and would hope he wouldn't subject himself or others in obtaining a CDL IF he thinks he might have a compromised ability in driving habits. Personally, I wouldn't let the motor vehical division know anything that they need NOT know. Thats just my opinion. Peace to you both, Janet

Hi Amber,

I would hope that your husband would know if he is incapable of driving and if he questions his driving capability he would not drive.

My thoughts is don't tell the dmv unless it is asked of you. My other thought is call them and ask questions you can always give them a false name.

Good luck.
