Stuipd question of the day - Does anyone have trouble with alcohol since surgery? This has hapened twice where I had 2-3 glasses of wine with friends and end up feeling as if my head is going to explode. I think I am going to stay away from alcohol :( but I hadn't heard anyone discuss that this could be a problem.
LOL how silly is that. I am really glad to know it is not just me. Lord, how I enjoyed a nice glass of wine sitting outside around the fire or a wonderfully smooth single malt.
Hello Carol, i don't drink alcohol at all, i was warned by my neurosurgeon not to because i have an un ruptured annie. The alcohol elevates blood pressure.
So please be cafeful. The feeling that you had about your head felt like it was going to explode, is your blood rushing to your head caused by alcohol.
Take care
Nikki
Only took me two times to figure that out. The first I thought it was because I hadn't had anything to drink in so long. The second is when I knew something was up. I'm going to have a memorial service for all my fine wines and scotchs :)
Hi Carol - Most definitely have trouble with alcohol. A glass of wine or a cocktail is about all I can manage. I use to like to have a cold beer when it was extremely hot outside. Definite, no no. Heat and alcohol do not mix for me at all. Horrible headache. Take care. roxie
Hi Carole...I loved cocktail before my annie...and like you...I have tried a glass of wine and/or beer with a dinner out and had awful feelings in my head...also, lost my taste...so no longer to I drink alcohol...infact, I have high Bp and an annie that is being watched ... so like Nikki it has been advised ... not to drink...
It isn't just you...I so understand...the summer sitting out with a cocktail...yup...sometimes this journey really sucks...Happy Saturday ~ Colleen
:) I guess the good thing is that we are here to make the journey at all, Love you all (raising imaginary glass)!
Cheers to you too Carol...~
So true ... Cyber~hugs Colleen
hi Carol! very good question- not at all stupid-i have wondered about this for 3 years-i will ask pcp- but everything i read says no because alcohol decreases the healing & regeneration of brain cells. I had a SAH and have not had a drink in over 3 yrs.I am also on warfarin blood thinner so alcohol is not recommended. Also tobacco use is a big risk factor for anurysms. Strangely enough i don't miss either habit thank God.i quit smoking when i got cancer in 1980 went back to it in 1990 then quit for good in 1996. i would not even try it-too scary for me! Please talk to your doctor about this- feeling as tho your head will explode is very alarming since i had a rupture level 5-your dr will know whats best for your particular case-if you have a history of migraines, high blood pressure, etc etc. Bless you & yours!!
Thanks Ron and Sue. Makes sense, wine sometimes would give me a headache on a good day so it is probably magnified now. Ron, I quit smoking also. My surgeon was one of the best in NYC and when I went for my first consult he basically told me if I didn't quit smoking there was no reason to do the surgery because I would probably be dead within 3 years anyway. Kind of woke me up and I haven't smoked since. Ron I love when you mention the regeneration of brain cells. Every time I get those little shooting pains in my head (which my doctor told me was exactly that) I feel so good and welcome them, knowing that they mean I am healing :)
Hi Carol,
I had my rupture on january, 2009 , first coiled and 1 year later I received the PED.
I quit drinking alcol 11 years ago with AA support…so I’m still having my 24 hours every day…
Otherwise I’m not able to quit smoking, my doctor knows…and he does not insist.
Take care,
Giovanni
Hi Giovanni,
I gave up smoking when my neuro told me that it was the fastest way for my annie to bleed out. I smoke the electronic ones now. I just told myself that I was replacing one tabbaco with another. It worked for me. Its one year now that I stopped. You can buy them on line at www.nicolites.co.uk. Jennifer X
Hi Carole,
Like many here I found that I could not drink alcohol any more. I stopped drinking before my surgery. Tried it once afterwards and discovered I could not handle it any more. Jennifer X
Carol--I, too, find little or no tolerance for alcohol. For me, I don't get a headache--it's more walking etc..even after a couple of sips--it appears as if I've drunk the whole bottle! (although, it does seem to go straight to my head with dizziness/lightheadedness) I agree :( ---sometimes a margarita sounds like bliss- I haven't been specifically told not to drink, in fact, one neurologist told me there is absolutely nothing harmful with having a glass of wine if I feel like--so, if I feel like, I order something, knowing that it will likely go straight to my head (and I make sure I'm with people who know me--well!)
Yet another life change - D
We are one heck of a sober group here (@Dana or cheap dates :)) I agree my NS didn't tell me I couldn't but Lord it just kills me now. It is strange, not while I'm drinking - and I'm not talking about anything in excess, maybe the most I've had since surgery was one night I had 4 glasses of wine - it is a few hours later when it hits me like a freight train - the pain is bad and agree feel like I can't walk. It is someething to notice how most of us seem to experience some type of affect from it, but all a little different.
Giovanni, my doctor didn't insist but he said I should quit smoking. He told me it was the number one cause of my annie. After 4 days in the hospital without smoking, I just didn't light up when I left. I think I was ready anyway because I had cut back so much in the few months before (wouldn't have my first cig until after dinner),
Hi Carol,
You may be having an interaction between meds and alcohol. I didn’t drink before my rupture (I was 19) and my doctor recommended caution with drinking because of the anticonvulsant. For this reason I’ve rarely had more than a single glass of wine with dinner. You will also notice that many meds warn about combining with alcohol because of intensified drowsiness or other side effects.
Take care.
