Advice for SAH recovery in Connecticut

My mother had a SAH 3/1. Looking for advice on best sub-acute rehabs in greater Hartford as well as outpatient PT, OT and speech therapy. Any advice or wisdom welcome. Thank you.

I’m so happy you posted! It means we finally got the right message out and you looked in your spam folder! Good job Ms. Cordelia! Welcome!

Unfortunately I don’t know anything about Hartford CT. When my parents were still alive and had to be put into rehab, I knew the better facilities only because I had been a CPS Social Worker and knew the folks in APS who do the investigations for those facilities. When y Dad had to be put in one of the worst ones because of bed availability, I learned a lot more about Medicare and was on them like a hawk on a rabbit. If no one responds from CT, you might want to contact your County’s Adult Protective Services (APS) at the DHHS or DSS. They cannot recommend any particular one if you ask them where you should look into placing your mother, but they can tell you where they would place their relative. So have a nice little chat telling them what you need for your mom and ask them where they would want their mom to go. Don’t call straight at 0800, give them time to get their coffee, turn on computer, read emails, extra. So maybe around 0900. You will get their secretary or Administrative Assistant but that person should know, if they don’t, ask for an APS Investigator.

You will need to see where her insurance provider will pay as they will have contracts with different facilities, even on Medicare/Medicaid. There are limits on the days covered for Medicare which you can find here: https://www.medicare.gov/coverage/inpatient-rehabilitation-care

After my rupture, I went to the same Outpatient Rehab for PT I had been at prior when I was trying to avoid foot and lumbar surgery and then after my lumbar surgery I went to the same facility that’s part of our local hospital. I also had Speech Therapy at the same place. My ST referred me to the big teaching hospital I had been flown to for my rupture as they could give me the proper diagnosis. I was still on private pay insurance and just had to pay my costs for a specialist. I think it was almost nothing as I had met my deductible with the prolonged stay in NSICU (26) days. I was fortunate as my parents babysat me for a month or so.

Depending on your mother’s needs, she might be able to get home health care. This will be up to her doctor. Has her doctor advised you to where she will need to go, home or a facility? Both have advantages and disadvantages for a caregiver and a patient. If she goes to a facility, she will have round the clock care but the people in her life will need to visit daily at different times in the different shifts, 1st and 2nd, not so much 3rd as it’s the 11pm to 7 am shift generally, to ensure she is receiving adequate or better care. It helps to get to know the staff, they will also do a bit better work fi they don’t know when you’re coming to visit. Some staff seem to gossip a lot and you will learn many things about the staff and other patients.

If she comes home, you will probably have to keep an eye on her for 72 hours after the rupture. I’m basing that on my experience. Every subsequent coiling was 24 hours. I had a lot of rules on diet, specifically amount of protein and hydration. If your mom is still in NSICU, ask to speak to a Dietician, they will tell you the minimum amount of protein she needs, my surgeon told me the amount of hydration and what to use. After rupture, I had to drink a lot of Gatorade (I imagine any sports drink will do) and a lot of water, 2 or 3 times the amount of Gatorade which was three bottles a day of the 28 oz size. BH says it was twice the amount of water. So make sure to ask about that with someone and if she goes into rehab, make sure the doctor orders both in the amount they want her to have.

I’m hoping there will be some members who are familiar with Hartford and can share where they went or where their loved one went for services. Good luck!

I had an aneurysm clipped at Hartford Hospital. I used the same organization for rehab; their specialist in PT were helpful. For speech recovery, I am seeing the speech therapy at UConn, which a physician recommended. The group has been attentive and expert; I recommend them.
