Recovery?

Good morning

On the 25th I’m having a aneurysm clipped. I was wondering what to expect as far as recovery goes.

hi lori, just saying hi and keeping this on top of the pile- the default setting is "latest activity", i hope you get some replies soon~~ttyl!~~

Thank you Ron…!

I was coiled not clipped Lori...so I can't help too much...however, you can read more about clipping by clicking above at our BAF website and reading the information on clipping. I know one thing about all the procedures and they take time to heal...and lots of rest and patience...you have my prayers for the upcoming clipping ~ Gotcha in my Thoughts ~ Colleen

Good morning, Lori. I don't know how much help I can be in answering your question. I have two cerebral aneurysms; one was coiled, the other's position wouldn't allow coiling or clipping so was wrapped. I may not be able to help you much but I can tell you that after the craniotomy/wrapping I was in the hospital six days, and was kept sedated. I have only a couple of fleeting memories of my hospitalization. My incision had to be cleaned three times a day for 2 or 3 weeks after I came home. I hear that the morning after I came home it was pouring rain, I woke up at 5 am and insisted my husband and adult son get up so we could go to breakfast and shopping! I don't remember doing so, but don't doubt it.

I had a mild stroke a couple of days after being released from the hospital, so I've never known whether other minor problems I had were from the surgery or the stroke. For several months I had issues with staggering when I walked and getting my words out correctly, but this could be something you will not experience since it could have been a result of the stroke instead of the surgery. My family and I resorted to humor (oops, mom's been drinking again!). I think that helped me keep a positive outlook.

It will be six years next month since the craniotomy/wrapping.

Keep positive thoughts!

Good morning Donna, I have never heard of the wrapping…sounds like there is a lot more to it than a coil or clipping… Thank You for your help

Hi Lori. I had two clipped almost six months ago. I knew nothing about aneurysms until one burst. Youre very fortunate, in that the procedure is being done before it ruptures. I have been over every inch of information on this site, and read many personal stories. Please check them out. I was up walking in three days, washed my hair on the fourth [thank goodness lol]. Went back to work almost three months ago. After recovery I became very aware of family and friends and how much I love and appreciate them all. I have a few small problems, but I go through the day with a smile on my face, and a good attitude in my heart. Praying for you

Hi Lori,

I've gone thru 2 clipping surgeries (1998 and 2010) and in retrospect, the 1st clipping recovery was much harder to get thru then the 2nd one was, as the 1st time around I experienced a good 4 or 5 months of double vision ( as the aneurysm grew substantially and pushed my 3rd optic nerve into snapping in two), plus on the 1st the surgeon cut thru my temporal (jaw) muscle , which made it really difficult to open my mouth more then an inch or so --that was the biggest pain I think!

On the 2nd clipping, I had no such problems in my recovery, and I was driving within a bout a week and a half after surgery. You may want to ask the surgeon how he plans to go about gaining access to your annie, (had I known about the jaw muscle I would've decked my fridge out with easy to eat foods such as yogurts, etc) ..I was really lucky on the last clipping, it really wasn't all that debilitating for me. Hopefully, yours will also be a breeze to get thru ! Peace, Janet

Hi Janet,
Thank you, that helps to know about the jaw muscle. That would be painful and hard to eat.

Hi Roy,
Sounds like your doing very after a rupture… I am very thankful mine was found before it ruptured. Thank you for the prayers

Hi Lori,

I had a clipping done a year ago. I had a relatively easy recovery. 48 hours in neuro ICU then home. I loaded a soduko app on my phone and played it the evening following my morning surgery to test myself. I didn't even tell my husband about that. I saw my family right after once in my room. Didn't remember anything of the surgery. No pain just upset stomach from meds. Dozed on and off. Next morning I took a walk with help around the floor. Started eating and drinking. Neuro evals every few hours which was annoying but necessary. Hubby took me home 48 hours later. Got up the following morning and made coffee and saw my youngest off to high school, then back to bed. I took 6 weeks off from work. Napped, watched Downton Abbey from start to finish. Really babied myself. One day of headaches after my 5 day course of steroids but that was it. Tylenol and some migraine meds for 2 days. I was very tired and couldn't stop eating carbs (luckily friends kept bringing chicken pies!!). Funny thing was I lost weight. I think my body was hard at work healing. I let it do it's job. Everyone's is different but my experience was not too difficult. Waiting for surgery was much harder. At my one year anniversary this month I am grateful to be here to support and encourage you!!

Nancy Thank You so much for sharing your recovery with me!
I sure hope mine goes as smoothly as yours did!
Thank You

Hi Lori

I had three aneurysms clipped last week on the 14th. The surgery was successful with no complications and took 6 hours. Coming out of anestheshia I wasn't even sure if I had been operated on. I was fairly drugged out but saw family and doctors. The first night was in the icu which is standard as they monitor you closely. The next morning I went for a CT and was really neausous. The nausea was worse then the pain as I am extremely sensitive to meds. Day 2 I felt fairly good other than nausea and couldn't or didn't want to eat. My blood pressure was really low so they kept me in the ICU one more night. They come in and take your vitals every two hours do it' tough to get rest. I stayed propped up when sleeping. My right eye was swollen shut but the swelling was almost gone by day 4. They get you up and moving right away. Day 3 I spent in regular room and released day 4. Washed my hair day 5. Once we got the nausea under control and I was able to start eating I felt much better. By the time I went back for my one week CT you would know I had brain surgery, my hair covered the staples and the swelling and bruising was faint. I walk everyday but tire easily. Take it easy. Have soft foods, soups etc as my jaw was really sore and hard to open mouth. Have a good support system and be kind and patient with yourself. I get my staples out Tues (10 days later) and look forward to it. I am off meds during the dyay and trying to get off at night. I feel better everyday. Faith hope and future!

Hi Michelle,
Thank You so much for sharing! Really made me feel better. I’ve been a little nervous today but not bad.
Thanks again,
Lori

Everyday is better and I can honestly say this morning I sit and it is hard to believe I had surgery less than 10 days ago. Tomorrow I get the staples removed and that too will be a milestone. Hang in there. Be strong. Get it behind you.

Hi Lori...sending out prayers and positive vibes to you...~ Colleen
