Post coiling follow-up

My aneurysm burst in 2007 and had coiling. I don’t remember how many angios I’ve had since then…at least 10 because the MRI doesn’t give the doctor enough detail. Angios make me sick for two days and I’ve asked my surgeon for MRIs to no avail. Thanks goodness as my aneurysm grew back at full strength and had surgery 3 years ago. They just want to make sure everything is fine.

I had a 6 month followup visit but no scan and then a CT angiogram at 1 year. The coiled 10mm aneurysm looked fine ("effectively no aneurysm") and the 3mm untreated aneurysm had not changed in size or shape, so I am to be followed at 1 year intervals. If I never have another catheter angiogram, I wil be a happy woman!

My six month check up was a MRI. My twelve month was a MRI. My Two year check was a MRI and my Doc was so pleased that he tol me to wait two more years for my next check. So far he has not wanted a cerebral angiogram.

Not really. I had vertigo off and on but that intensified. No head aches or pain. Just dizzy as all get out. Since the coiling last year I’ve had vertigo off and on but nothing intense. Have not had any since May! So excited about that.

I was given the option of having an angiogram MRI or CAT scan but my Dr. Did want me to have an angiogram at least once within 3 years of having the coiling. I choose to get it over with and had the angiogram after 6 months.

I just had an MRA for my six month check after coiling and they found the coils have compacted so I’m now scheduled for the angiogram. I too wish I could have something less invasive but it’s needed at this point so I need to just do it. My aneurysm had ruptured initially so had a SAH which was treated with coiling. A little scared of the angiogram but more so because I will not be completely sedated rather than needing further surgery. As a matter of fact although the surgeon didn’t say this, I feel he thinks more is going on that the MRA is not revealing and the angiogram will be the definitive answer so I’m trying not to let my nerves get the better of me. The angiogram gives a better picture. Best of luck to you and your husband. Tough journey this has been but you’ll find a lot of information here.

I had a CAT scan at 6a months. Then my angiogram one year later. Dr. said everything looked good that I didn’t have to have it done for 3years, but the study that they enrolled me in requires another next year. It’s not bad I have had no problems with rebleeds or new developed aneurysms. Because of the study they provide my medical care free. I hope this helps.

yes, my last 2 six month check ups were just mri

Hi , I had a 6 month CT angiogram then another 1 year later , I’m also to have one every year for 5 years

I had the angiogram at 6 months and was told I would need another in 5 yrs but that I should have an MRI every year in between.

Yes. Not too sure where you live but I am in the UK and had the aneurysm clipped last October at Addenbrookes Hospital. I went for the check up and had no CT scans or anything else. It felt a bit strange to just walk out of the door and know that there would be no further follow up but I am fine and each day improving. It was an unruptured aneurysm if that makes any difference.

Yes I have had 2 MRA's in the past 10 months after a re-coil and 2 stents to hold into place

I had a 6 month angiogram that followed my coiling. I am now due now for a 1 year MRA following the 6 month angiogram.. Hope this helps. I am doing very well at this time.

Had coiling for 2 aneurysms last year and had a 9 month follow up MRA. Have to repeat the MRA in 6 months.

Hi Iris. I had a 3 month, 6 month and 1 year angiogram after my coiling (May 2013). I have 2 other annies that have not ruptured. After my 1 year one they said everything looked great and there was no change in the other 2 or my coiling and I don't have to go back for another one for 3 years.

My mother had to have a cerebral angiogram for a follow up every 6 months or so. She didn't like it, but it is important to do. My mother's coiling had changed size and had moved along the artery. After a couple of treatments, they wanted to put a mesh in to prevent the coiling from moving further. She chose not to have that operation done as it was in a very difficult place. She later passed, knowing the consequence of having it done or not having it done. So the angiogram is an important part of routine follow up.

I had the same question when my wife went back for the 6 month check up. She had the angiogram then and again at the 18 month check up. That was in 2013, and her next check up is in 2015. At the last one the surgeon said her repair was perfect. I guess one can't have a better report than that! This is at Swedish in Denver. My understanding is that the angiogram gives the best picture of the situation. Of course there are risks, but there are other kinds of risks all the time, too. We have been satisfied with the angiogram even though we might have hoped that something less would be satisfactory.

My Mom had a 6 month angio after coiling, from there on it has been MRA's only !!

I had to delay my follow up for a.year. Lack of healthcare coverage. I was terrified to go through it but found it was less tramtic than the three I had done to coil and stent. Great news don’t have to do again from a year.

First check up will be a year in Sept with an MRI - hopefully no extra bubbles and no missing coils!
