So, I asked my dr if I could stay on my plavix for 3 months (since I see that so many of you with unruptured anueryms coiled and stented do). I explained that I am having a lot of anxiety about coming off of it at 6 weeks (which is now). The nurse sent back a message saying that he had reviewed my care plan and still wants me to stop the plavix as planned and stay on the full dose aspirin. Can anyone else who has done this protocol please comment and help calm my anxiety about coming off the plavix at 6 weeks. My surgeon acts like this is what he always does, so I’m thinking others must have done it this way. Please comment and let me know. Very thankful for this group.
Kim...I was coiled (after 3 ER's oer 29 days....and, apx 9 docs/their teams...and, one surgery to pin my right shoulder (fractured the day of my initial black-out/ER)...and into coiling...with coronary care between days of coiling... I was then discharged (refused to be kept by Internal Rehab Director...also on local faculty!) ...I was discharged w/nothing more than a week of nimodipine (another chapter), basic aspirin, and tsyllium ... (sp?)
however, the form to the HomeHellth Care 'speech therapist"...noted that I should have 'low-acid diet' and that I was allergic to IODINE (yes, in caps) ...and, I was not placed on anything like Plavix...for apx 14 months and the last angio / stenting...(another chapter...or two)...
So each of us can/may have a different diagnostic requirement for those massive blood thinners... and, the depth of their blood tests before discharge... and that big decisions of a qualified neuro-docs... vs a "today's promotion" of whichever product...
Kim, best info to suggest is to search Plavix online:...
beginning w Plavix Side-effects
and, whatever other (blanking on a word as I type...) one is Warnings...
and, discuss any of your concerns with your docs.. .
Added this to you...because I had the bad reactions...and, I know many members have had long-term use...
Thank you. I have had no bad reactions to it this far. I’ve been trying very hard to get answers from my doctor about why I would only do 6 weeks, but so far haven’t been able to get an answer. Frustrating.
