Has anyone been successful in securing long term care insurance AFTER their aneurysm was discoverd? Mine have been treated but I still have a residual. I was told that if you get rejected by one company you will likely be denied by all, so I’ve been procrastinating trying.
Hey Judi,
I have had some… …let’s just say ‘extensive’ experience with insurers. Some of which has been very challenging.
Many/most of these companies will not cover for pre-existing conditions, if it’s known but not disclosed, they can null and void any cover. Some may say they’ll cover you for everything except your head (I had one such company say this). The problem being you could trip over, break your leg and them say it was due to your head ie you had a dizzy spell causing you to trip. I enquired, “What if it had nothing to do with my head?” And I was told (And I quote) “We have a 100 lawyers who will fight it…”
I’d suggest you make some ‘discrete’ enquiries, over the phone, without disclosing too much identifiable information ie “I have a friend/family member who I’m making enquiries for…”. Back before my own health issues, I use to teach people with disabilities and I’d often have to research options for clients. Due to privacy laws, I was unable to ‘legally’ disclose personal information and I could ‘as a worker’ put theoretical scenarios to obtain the info I wanted and ask the questions in the 3rd person. ie “My client ‘John’…”. Sometimes talking in the 3rd person, the telephonist can be more forthcoming with information. Once you have some information you can make a more informed decision.
I wish you the best of luck BUT, I doubt you’ll find any insurer willing to cover you or the cost of such cover would be astronomical.

You might want to call your local SHIP office (State Health Insurance Program) and ask there. Yes they deal mostly with Medicare/Medicaid but they might be able to give you good information. As Merl suggests, you’ll have to see how much the insurance company goes up in costs every year. They may have an automated cost increase. I don’t have long term care but I did some quick searching and found this site Finding Local Services | ACL Administration for Community Living
