Gardening

For me, gardening of any type has always been relaxing. I received a link for a free book today and wanted to share it. It’s available on Amazon free for two days. Ends tomorrow Saturday April 18, 2015. The author who I frequently read has some disabilities and chose this type of gardening to help her. Debra is also a Master Gardener, willing to answer emails if you can’t find the answers on her site.

(I use smile. Amazon to assist Ben’s Friends in keeping their sites going. Doesn’t cost me anything and Amazon provides a small but much needed source of monetary support to keep our group and other rare disease groups going. They have a lot of other groups one can pick if one wants.)

Another note - if you are in the United States and qualify for an EBT card, you can use it to purchase seeds or seedlings at stores that accept an EBT card. In our neck of the woods that would be places like our local grocery stores, some of the Mom and Pop stores out in the country and big stores like Walmart or Kmart. I bought some sweet potato slips last year, 9 slips for $1.00 on sale, used Straw Bale Gardening Method and in five straw bales reaped 49 pounds. Not quite sure how much Ohana ate…but we only reaped a few pounds of Ichibana eggplant - the thief!

Also I use my own mix as I can’t really afford the mix suggested on Straw Bale Gardening. I do have a lot of tree leaves, access to more trees and access to about 50 head of horses manure that is always used aged. All for free. We are fortunate enough to live on about an acre and I compost almost everything. I have been known in the past to go by construction sites and receive the odd cinder block or two as well as bricks. I keep them nicely stacked until I have enough for what I need.

Gardening is fantastic. I love being in my garden on a beautiful day. It helps to soothe the soul.
