Flying with a non ruptured aneurysm

Hi guys,

Has anyone flown with a non ruptured, non coiled aneurysm? My mom who is currently under the wait and watch method will be taking an 18 hr flight next month. Her neuro said it should be no problem. However, I am still a bit worried. I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences :)

nhayat...a good question...over time, many of us have discussed similar...I hope you will get a number of responses...

A comparison...you may want to share/ask: the artery/segment; the size/shape of the aneurysm...and, what is the doc's "wait and watch" estimated time frame; how long has your mother been in the wait/watch time?

Then, depending on where she will be...IF her med insurance would cover her IF she had any need while away(for any reason)...or IF she has secured some travel insurance...sorry I am blanking on terminology on this one...

Hope you get more responses... those who have traveled...or not...

We are not doctors for the most part here and though we cannot provide medical advice, perhaps members can share experiences. I flew a year before my rupture , but not an 18 hour flight. Remember many of us live long productive lives and never know we had a brain aneurysm. All the literature indicates SAH is rare.

BAF says this : "Can I fly?

Yes. Patients diagnosed with an aneurysm can fly. After surgery, patients should consult with their doctor at their follow up appointment."

Research from China writes this:

And finally, what does your mother want to do?

Hello

After my rupture of 2 months 4 coils I was told by doctors no problem to fly. I would not be to concerned. I would believe what a neurosurgeon says.

I have not flown yet, 2 1/2 years since cranny with ruptured aneurysm. Neuro. says it is fine but I am very worried due to the fact I have severe balance issues with changes in the barometric pressure. We may travel this summer, still worried though!!

Hi pat

I would not be concerned. If neuro says fine. Just go and enjoy. I was told fine after 2 months coils. All the best and do not worry. Have a good trip.

I have a non ruptured aneurism & am on the ‘wait & see what happens’ plan. I have flown without any problems, but each person is different. (I just don’t recommend bungy jumping or sky diving.)

Hi nhayat,

I had one basilar artery and one MCA aneurysm and was flying back and forth without any problems. I actually flew back home a month later I was diagnosed with aneurysms to get a second opinion on the treatments. I totally understand your concern but feel safe that it should be OK. Good luck for your mum.

Thanks for posting this. I have an unruptured as well and my BIL is getting married in Florida. My husband is a groomsmen and I’m terrified to fly no matter what my doc might say about it. Driving would take a whole day without stopping and we have a toddler. Im not really crazy about my BIL so don’t want to risk my life for a wedding. I also can’t imagine driving either. My MIL is weirdly unsympathetic and seems to be insisting that we go despite my health worries. Feeling rather lost on this decision.

Thanks Mark! I am still debating this!
