Benefits from coiling

Hi, all. Tonight was our local support group meeting, and the surgeon who was the speaker showed us images of a woman who had a giant aneurysm that was compressing a vein such that blood was not flowing back out of her brain, and the swelling was what gave her symptoms. The doctors coiled the annie, and he showed us post-coiling images.

My question is this. Wouldn't a balloon full of platinum press on its surroundings the same way a balloon full of blood would? The meeting ran over, so I didn't get to ask him that question. Sure, they made it safer from rupture, but what else was improved?

Maybe a balloon full of platinum coils pressing on the brain would provoke seizures?

Interesting point...Perhaps this would give reason behind the fact that so many 'after-coilers' wind up with serious headaches/head pain after their procedures..(Not all of them do, I for one was coiled after a rupture, and I had no headaches/pains before or after)I did however have vision issues (both before and after . ) my coils compacted after 3 years and I was able to fore go getting more coils and opted for a clipping--in my opinion, coils are a tad on the dicey side.

Take care, Janet

I have had a coiling and then re-coiling and stent of a large aneurysm and have experienced some seizures since the procedures. My specialist seems to think that the coils resting on the lobe of my brain are provoking the seizures.

HNH...
Greetings again...it has been ages...How have you done w/yoga?

RE: "a balloon full of platinum press on its surroundings the same ...when full of blood?"...

I can only imagine...no...I asked that question in our "ask the doc" 03/03/13... yet awaiting an answer....sometime/somewhere along the way, I asked about the weight of metal (platinum/titanium or whatever the ingredients) compared to the weight of blood fluid...(and, can our blood weights vary?)

Perhaps someday we will get responses...I was coiled and for numerous reasons, I do not believe it is the minimally invasive procedure to which it is marketed...

Hope we all may share more ...

I have given up yoga except for the occasional DVD at home. I can't keep up with the class, and I wasn't getting my money's worth. I have weakening in some muscles, especially the legs, from an attack of transverse myelitis a few years ago.

I have an appointment next month with an interventional radiologist to discuss possibly getting a pipeline embolization device. We shall see.

HNH...I cannot do all of yoga because of damage to my lumbar spine area in rehab...etc...

I am so geared to some of it...i.e. the deep breathing exercises...some others...

Have you had any aneurysmal treatment done yet...re: maybe selecting a Pipeline?

Pat

No treatment. Watching and waiting because my ophthalmic artery grows out of the wall of the thing. Can't coil it. Risk of clipping is higher than natural risk of it bursting. Apparently there is a new pipeline that magically stops blood flow to the annie without stopping it to the ophthalmic. I am eager to hear it explained, because it doesn't make any sense to me.

I agree on this being a valid question. The only thing I have to add is that my neurosurgeon said that while the “bulge” still exists in my brain, with the coils, at least the blood flow isn’t pulsing it ever so slightly larger at times and that it is now still and might not press on anything. I do have headaches, that I did not have prior to the coils and PED, and they are as clear as day to me based on blood pressure and flow in that area, so I’m confused about that and think it’s more in relation to my PED than my coils. I think the docs should sell us on the curative nature of the devices but better disclose the cons of them also.

Thanks for this info...so hope you will keep us updated...

In the case of a stent...have they determined when they recommend it be done?

Hugs and prayers...

I was coiled in 09 sah, I don't even know it is there, also I needed recoil and still do not feel it- it must be in a favorable spot, I get no headaches except sinus kind. Most people who complain of headaches seem to have clips from my recall here- would be a good survey, I got brain zaps and pinches which is from nerves reconnecting and dried blood being cleared, ttyl have a great day
