Thank you kindly for sharing this, its amazing how a little bit of knowledge could go a long way an possibly result to improving many lives. God bless
DeAnna,
Oooops, should have said Luteotropic hormone (LTH) (also known as Prolactin (PRL)) which makes you lactate. This hormone is turned on and off from the pituitary. What it sounds like you have is a Prolactinoma (a non-cancerous tumor in the pituitary), but Iâm not a doctor, LOL. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prolactinoma
There are several specialists in your area of Florida for you to call and ask if they take your insurance. Be sure to tell the receptionist your symptoms, and that you need to see a specialist as soon as you can. You may not get to see these doctors right away, you may have to see one of their assistants. Dr. Kennedy had the best reviews.:
Steven Brem, M.D.
Professor of Oncology & Neurosurgery
Interim Chair, Department of Neuro-Oncology
Director of Neurosurgery / Co-Director, Radiosurgery
Tampa, FL
Dr. Laurence Kennedy
Endocrinologist 1600 SW Archer Rd. Gainesville
FL
Steven Roper, M.D.
Professor of Neurosurgery
Gainesville, FL
Whichever doctor you get to see, get their email address first and forward them those articles.
Good luck! Let me know what happens!

Hi this is what I got told by our neurosurgeon team after a rupture depending on where the rupture is and what effect it has depends if you put on weight or loss I am lucky I am losing but I have had a weight problem for years mine rupture was on the carotid y bend so both sides of my brain have been effected I had a stroke that has effected the left side. Talk to your doctors, because they told me weight gain is not a eating or diet thing it has to do with the brain. I am a kiwi and our team sounds pretty onto it even though they donât have a bedside manner
keep positive you come through this
After my aneurysm I found I couldnât smell. It really muted my ability to taste things. I was eating like a horse (much more than I ate before the surgery but since I couldnât smell it or taste it fully, I just never felt full) until I figured it out! I didnât realize how much eating was related to the sense of smell until I couldnât do it. I kind of had to to re-teach myself to listen to my stomach and practice portion control. I donât know if that may be your issue, but have you been able to smell? Food odors really affect how much you eat. Just my thoughts.
I have also gained 15 lbs and i gave up soda and went to all water, and im still gaining, but i use to smoke also and quit that of course in the hosp. may 29 2010 i really think you gain after you quit smoking i dont feel like i am eating moreâŚi just cant afford to gain anymoreâŚany one else quit smoking and think it could be from that?? Debbi
My partner Karen has gained some weight after her aneurysmâŚShe is a small Japanese woman never weighing over 97 poundsâŚtoday she weights 104âŚand has a belly!!!
Susan
thank you so much,i will find out and keep n touch, god bless DeAnna
Debbi,
I was in the hospital May 25 thru June 19, I also quit smokingâŚI had lost 25 pounds while I was in the hospital, but since have gained it all backâŚI am definately not eating more than before, but feel in my case that it is the restrictions I am on, I cannot do anything, so therefore, my body saysâŚlets gain weight! At the same time, I do know several people who have quit smoking & have gained weight, but they also developed a sweet tooth, or are just plain eating moreâŚso at this point itâs really hard to say.
Actually I was at a brain support meeting last night and they told us the first sense to come back after a brain trauma is smell!!! HmmmmâŚeveryone is differentâŚ
I too have had an issue with weight gain. Usually weigh around 123 and now am pushing 137lbs five months post SAH. I have never had to watch what I eat in the past. Currently am eating healthier than in the past and exercising ALOT more. Have suspected that my pituitary gland was somehow related. After reading this thread I intend to have a long conversation with my neurologist in 3 weeks.
Yes! I have. I donât like water, Black Coffee is my beverage of choice.
Have you been checked for thyroid and/or celiac?
Did he talk to you about reducing / eliminating gluten?
Have you had any changes in your digestion / elimination?
Definitely water / juice is always goodâŚwhether someone has had brain treatment or notâŚ
Please ask your md if he has not addressed these potentials with youâŚ
Hi Martha,
When you go to your neurologist, bring print outs of the articles I posted earlier in this thread, and get a referral for a Pituitary Endocrinologist. I went through several endos before I found one that could help me, this was a big waste of money and time!
Good luck!

Thanks Juli really nice of you to share quite helpful
I know this is a very belated response, but in case you are still gaining I have some new research to share on the subject. I will look again to see if you reply and I will share.
I didn't have a rupture, but I did gain 30 pounds in the year after my craniotomy. I think part of it was being over 40 and my metabolism finally slowing down. Part of it was that I was just too tired all the time to be as active as I had been. Also, I had Gamma Knife radiation 3 times for my AVM during that general time period.
My crani was 3 years ago. I lost 10 pounds last fall, but that was due to stress taking care of my mother in her last few months. I gained 5 of it back this summer even though I have started exercising again--could be some muscle gain. I've also been snacking more since I'm at home during the summer & have more access to junk food. My school year is starting back up, but I'm hoping to keep in my exercise routine--and I'll be sitting less & moving more in my classroom.
Ah, you are doing fine then. I found that my bleed had affected my pituitary and that I needed to take humatrope.
I've gained alot of weight since my aneurysm. I chalk it up to alot less physical activity and medications. I am hoping I can get rid of it in the future. So your not alone...
Where was your aneurysm?
