Visual disturbances after flow diverter surgery

Hello all

Finally got my flow diverter stent about 6 weeks ago and I am having terrible headaches and visual disturbances. It is these that are upset lying me most. Does anyone else have experience of this? It seems like half of my vision is pixelated and shiny, it is difficult to explain what it is like.

I had scintillating scotomas after a catheter embolization and again after the repeat angiogram.

My scotomas would appear like a small teardrop just off centre of my vision. The teardrop was like frosted glass and it would grow slowly into a wide C shape, complete with jagged teeth! It would continue to grow until it covered my whole vision in both eyes before resolving, not to return for a day or two. The whole episode would last maybe 15-20 minutes.

The above turns out to be typical for scintillating scotomas – often with some rainbow colouring around the shape or with some shiny edges. How similar is what you’ve got to something like this?

Mine reduced in frequency over maybe 5 weeks. The resumption after the angiogram was maybe three weeks.

We ascribed mine to irritation from the contrast material, hence fading over time as that was absorbed.

Best wishes,

Richard

After my rupture I had beautiful filigree lights, like fine Itish lace and unbelievable headaches that stumped both all of my specialists - neurosurgeon, neurologist and the ophthalmologist. After several years they went away. When I had my stent placed, everything seemed better. I’d reach out to your surgeon’s team, if nothing else to let them know what’s going on. My neurologist believed they were atypical migraines so I asked if that meant since he didn’t really know he put them. My ophthalmologist ran all sorts of tests and came up with nothing more than I’d lost peripheral vision on both sides which eventually corrected itself but the beautiful lace patterns continued for several months later. I truly hope you get some relief! Remember to stay hydrated and get your electrolytes in as well as the protein needed. Sometimes it’s really hard to stay hydrated when we have headaches but it’s better for our brains.

Hopefully you get some answers and relief:crossed_fingers:

Yes!!! Oh, I’ve been having this for about a year, similar vision disturbances in my right field of vision and terrible headaches. They seem to be an amplification of migraines that I’ve had since I was 17 (am 64 now). I can say that they are better than they were 2 months ago. I started taking propanol, and high has helped. My neurologist thinks that the stent has caused inflammation as a response to its presence in the left, internal carotid artery. The aneurysm was extremely large and pressing on the optic nerve when it was discovered.

I was getting those for about two-three months following my embolization. They actually admitted me to make sure it was not a stroke but I guess it was just my body healing - aura headaches. It’s a weird feeling.

Thank you for getting back to me. Hospital did CT scan and lumbar puncture to make sure I did not have another bleed, thankfully all clear. So they think it is just response to healing after surgery.

Thanks again for all your responses it is comforting to hear from others who has had the same thing. Xxx
