This is spooky. I was thinking of you today. I am so sorry you feel so bad. I joined Facebook in order to be added to a group - brain aneurysm awareness UK. You should join. It is really supportive with loads of advice from folk who have had procedures. Maybe that would be of help to you. Have you seen the doctors since we last spoke, because what you are going through sounds awful?
No I haven’t seen a doctor since I was last in the Southern. I think because the last procedure was an unusual thing I have thought it will take a longer time to recuperate. Fed up with it all though . Have you had any more word about what is happening ? What is the group you have joined ? Sounds good
Good wishes , Shona xx
Count me in with the taste changes as well. I’m 15 years post subarachnoid aneurysm craniotomy and for the last year or so changes in taste have become an issue. I visited dietician who suggests I reintroduce myself to the fruit/ veggies I used to love as I have lost any desire to consume. Eating for me now is more of a task not really having a desired food/meal to consume. Sometimes I will get the urge for a few days for something in particular, burn myself out on it and back to the just eat to survive mode. At least now my desire for water is insatiable and I’m hydrated
The average person has about 10,000 taste buds and they’re replaced every 2 weeks or so. But as a person ages, some of those taste cells don’t get replaced. An older person may only have 5,000 working taste buds. That’s why certain foods may taste stronger to you than they do to adults.
Also, it’s estimated that 80% of your taste is actually smell, so any change in how you process scent will impact your taste.
A UK study tried to pinpoint when/how taste changes over time. Here’s a list of food and the average age the participants liked them:
• Garlic: 19
• Pickles: 19
• Curry: 20
• Kidney beans: 20
• Mackerel: 20
• Spinach: 21
• Peppers: 21
• Eggplant: 21
• Horseradish: 21
• Mussels: 21
• Parmesan: 21
• Blue cheese: 22
• Anchovies: 22
• Avocado: 23
• Asparagus: 23
• Chili sauce: 24
• Oysters: 24
• Brie: 24
• Olives: 25
• Goat cheese: 28
I read this topic before and mentioned it to my family, so the other day they had cooked a bbq and offered me some lamp chops which i have never liked and avoided for 45 years. I ate the chop and couldn’t believe that i loved it, my family found it very amusing that i now love what I could not stand.
I refuse to try oysters which is my other dislike just on the fact that i dont want to like them. Ha ha! So go ahead try something you didn’t like, you may find you really like it.
