Shunts

TIA :)

Donot worry...call your Doctor and ask if this is normal...? and/or seek medical attention at the ER...I wouldn't think fluid buildup is a good thing...~ Thoughts out to you ~ Colleen

Hi Deb, call the nuerosurgeons office-the nurse will be able to help- they will know your particular model of shunt, my Canadian friend gets nausea when shunt malfunctions, but re my codman the nurse said i'd be sleeping all day if it needs adjusting

My mom has a shunt, she has had it since 1997. Her neurosugen checks it every 5 years or so for movement. I would suggest to have it checked for movement or shifting. Good luck!

Hi Nicole, you should have it checked most definitely. The shunt could be malfunctioned. What kind of shunt do you have? I have a Codman Hakim where mine drains to my belly.

another thing, when I had mine checked with my new Neurosurgeon here in my new home state of Ohio, the reading on the shunt was an 8, and my surgeons started with a 10 when he placed the shunt so it changed, and he had to reset it, but I'm probably due to have rechecked with the weather changes, I feel my sinus when the weather gets colder, they just pop in the morning. As we know, sinus is pressure from fluids, otherwise I feel fine. But always aware of changes.

Today, the temp is low30's, down from 50's, I feel it, mostly the ear, completely plugged on left side. Crazy hah?

Hello Deb

I read your post hoping there maybe an answer that would help me too…

I am 11 weeks after intraosseous meningioma debulking and cranioplasty and still massive fluid collection under my scalp every morning which takes the whole day to drain.

i am very very keen to hear from anyone who has experienced anything remotely similar. PLEASE!

Hey Jackie,
I have a shunt and post craniotomy surgery I had a friend come to see me, she’s a bit of a character, making silly jokes about the row of staples in my scalp looking like a train track and with one particular comment I laughed rather hard. The instant I did so I heard a noise, like blowing through a straw into a milkshake. My first comment was “What the hell was that? Did you hear that?” She looked at me strangely saying she hadn’t heard anything. The following day I spoke to the surgeon about it, turns out it was the CSF being forced out through the gaps in the craniotomy plate they replaced. Now In my situation the bone eventually grew over the gaps and sealed the CSF inside the skull so that the only outlet or the fluid was the shunt and not the gaps in the craniotomy skull plate.
Post neurosurgery CFS leaks are not uncommon, after a craniotomy that normally sealed unit, your skull, is no longer sealed BUT I would be recommending you speak to your surgeon as a priority. They may well tell you that it’s normal to have some fluid and that it will settle, as mine did. But if there is an issue with the shunt function they may need to investigate. On one occasion my shunt tubing had a blockage and needed to be flushed to clear the tubing, it wasn’t a big issue but had I not followed it up, it could have developed into a major issue. ie an infection.
Make an appointment to go and see your surgeon. They would be the best people to advise you, but please do go and have it followed up.

Thank you your guidance and yes I will as a priority tomorrow
