I recently have been having a semi rapid visual field loss since my surgery and a burning in my back where I received to spinal blood patches for CSF leak following surgery. Has anyone experienced problems this far out after surgery?
Hey there Ms. Hall. I had a craniotomy back in 2010 and I still have peripheral vision loss from time to time. I explained it to my neurologist and neurosurgeon. They both indicated it was residual effect from the surgery. They explained that if ever it happens, try calming my mind or removing myself from the situation. The vision loss has gotten much better over time, but if it happens I simply take a break from work or if I am driving, pull off at the next exit to allow my brain to “catch up.” Hope this helps.
I discovered during an eye exam that I have significant peripheral vision loss mostly in the upper half of my field of vision. I cannot see Any graying or blind spots, but I have trouble focusing if I’m moving, walking or driving. I have sporadic spider web flickering in one of my eyes as well, which seems to be worse if I’m stressed. My Neuro says all of this is due to residual effects of the surgery ( mine was an unruptured dbl. Annie and craniotomy. When I woke up from my surgery I had excruciating back pain, mostly in my tail bone, but also in my low back. My surgeon said that was a flare up from a previous injury or condition and that he sees it frequently. I imagine lying in a funky position for 5 hours with no support for my neck, back etc irritated everything. 13 mos later I still deal with back and neck pain, but mostly when I let myself get tired or I push myself… I’m not talking about any strenuous exercise, or chores either. Just daily stuff, shopping, driving, going to restaurant, or movie. I am greatly limited and have poor stamina. I go to a massage therapist, chiropractor, and get acupuncture regularly which definitely helps, but is not curing me permanently. I am grateful to have the side effects I DO have, as I’ve seen and heard of much much worse. Be gentle to yourself and use your meds and practicioners to your best advantage. My Neuro told me to give myself another year for the vision problems to hopefully heal, our brains are slow to heal! Best Wishes and God Bless!
Deborah, I have all the symptoms that you have described. The vision problems get worse in the evening when I am tired. When I go to the theater, symphony or musicals I close my eyes. When I am in the passenger seat and somebody else is driving I have to close my eyes. Thank you for sharing your experiences.
Removing yourself from the situation helps a lot even if it’s just for a couple of minutes!
I had the tailbone pain in hospital. Back too. Even my legs hurt. I could hardly walk! Dr. said it happens after 5 hours in surgery and 3 weeks in hospital. After a month in bed after. It’s been 2 years and back and neck is only thing now that hurts. I’m on a bed and under meds. It was wooped me BIG time… Why? I wonder, what to do? Physical therapy for 2 years hasn’t gotten rid of it. Please comment. I’m 50 now.
My ruptured aneurysm happened May of 2013 (Mother’s Day ) and I still have vision problems. I have not, gotten my eyes checked, waiting for disability to come through. If I am on the computer to long, or for no reason I get spots, flashes, dots all sorts of interesting designs, I just breath, close my eyes and enjoy the free buzz! Open eyes slowly usually the instance us still happening, just keep breathing deeply, and it passes. I take it as my body telling me I am doing to much to fast.
When I'm the passenger in a car, i close my eyes because i get anxious...!!! My brain can't process everything that fast. And yes! the computer, iPad, phone, even the TV bothers me at times. I'm photophobic, so always wearing tinted lenses too.

Hi, Katie,
I am new to the forum, yet my ruptured double aneurysms happened in 2009. Mine were behind my left optic nerve. I kept thinking, if I just had my glasses, I would see "normal"...well, it's my new normal. I have total periphal vision loss & I can't see below my knees..Yikes! no more driving for me. This equates to loss of independence. Mine definitely has triggers that make it mush worse-floresant lights, night, large groups of people to name a few. My optimologist sent me for my 2nd emerency surgery due to inflamation behind my left eye...so, I had my shunt put in...headaches are on a daily basis..with a weekly migraine.
Hope that helps.
Blessings and light,
Elle
Thankyou everyone for the words of wisdom and insight. Family and friends just don’t understand to constant struggles and don’t know how the help with the answers. I appreciate everyone’s feedback it helps me feel like I am still " normal" . My ophthalmologist ( since I work for 8 of them) were all concerned with the visual field defects that weren’t present in September and worsened since November so I am going to be scheduled for another ct-scan after all better safe than sorry! My PCP has also set up physical therapy for the back issues and ultrasound to rule out any underlying conditions related to my continued use of Motrin to combat the headaches. Hearing from all of you have made all these appointment a lot less scary for me. Thankyou and may we all continue to be blessed!!
I am a little late on joining in.... but I am about 3 1/2 years post coiling. My visual field tests are fine though I did temporarily lose peripheral vision during an ocular migraine post non-related surgery.
My visual oddity/issue now is that I have a "bubble" of distortion develop in my left eye after any near sighted work (looking at my phone, threading a needle, trimming my son's nails). It's a circle filled with squiggly lines of distortion that appears a few minutes into any near sighted work; it is a nuisance, but it fades after 10 minutes or so or normal/far focus. Once it develops it becomes near impossible to read close-up through the blur.
It doesn't float like the floaters in my eyes; it stays fixed in my center field of vision and equals maybe a diameter of 2-3 inches of coverage when I look up at a wall a few feet away. This occurs with my left eye...my annie is coiled & on my right ophthalmic artery. Neurosurgeon, opthamologist and optometrist are baffled but not concerned.
This has been going on now for probably a couple of years, but now it comes on more quickly and reliably every time I do near work instead of just on occasion. It now sometimes appears to have a bright dot in the center of it. On rare occasion I feel like I also see it in my right field of vision with my left eye closed; can't tell if I am still "seeing" from my left eye despite it being closed or if it truly is present in my right as well but in lesser degree. The latter makes me feel it may be a brain thing instead of an eye thing.... I try not to get anxious but can't help but wonder what's going on....just tired eyes (41 yrs old) or something to do with the bleed or coiling.
