Anyone treated or waiting treatment for an MCA bifurcation aneurysm? Curious about aneurysm size, treatments, and how things went.
I had one forming on the right MCA trifurcation - which I was told is normally at bifurcation. I had a 6mm on the right on the anterior communicating artery bifurcation that they clipped and while there they wrapped my MCA aneurysm. I have another one possibly forming on the left MCA trifurcation that they are watching - radiology report said it was 2mm. I feel that my recovery went very well.
Have you been given treatment options and do you know what size yours is?
Take care,
~ Carol
Hi Carol, I have a left MCA aneurysm that is 4mm. I saw my neurosurgeon today and he said its tiny, and has a very low risk of rupture(close to zero). However, because I’m incredibly nervous, he said that I could do a keyhole outpatient surgery to clip it with about a 1% risk. He said it can’t be coiled. I’m 34 years old.
The man thing is rather or not it is growing. I personally would go ahead and have the surgery to clip it. It is a 99.9% fix (I believe that is the percentage). Then you won’t have to worry about it any longer. I didn’t know they could clip that one with such a small hole. Amazing!!! I had a much larger section of skull taken out but they had to drop in behind the eye and drill out the eye socket bone to get to it. I sure pray that you are able to have peace about whatever decision you make and I will support you in that decision. The risk in clipping or coiling is about the same, I found when I did my research and clipping just seemed like the right thing to do. As it turned out mine wasn’t a candidate for coiling either.
Take care and keep us posted,
~ Carol
Thanks… It’s been a long journey already and I’ve only known for three weeks. It’s such an incredible emotional burden that clipping feels like the right thing to do. My boyfriend and sister have made me promise to sleep on it for a few days first and think about it. Surgery would be in October.
I will keep you in my prayers as you go through this. I remember it was such a roller coaster ride. Mine was found in the middle of July and clipped the middle of September - I didn't have a whole lot of time in between the two, but it seemed like an eternity.
Hi - I had the same type of aneurysm and about the same age as you when I found out. It was relatively small at about 4 mm. I think the decision about treatment versus waiting and watching is a very personal one and depends on many factors. I personally opted to have it clipped. I have lost several aunts to ruptured aneurysms and I wasn’t prepared to mess around. I have two young children and was in good health and my surgeon is very proactive in scenarios like mine. It has been 2.5 years since the surgery and I am doing great. Very happy to have it all looked after and on a follow up regime that makes me feel like I am in control.
Weigh your options and really think about it. You need to do what is best for you and you alone. Best of luck in this long road filled with twists and turns!
Carol, your sound like the same location as mine. How was the recovery on that. Dr said I will be ouot in a couple of days and should be back driving in a couple of weeks. They have to take a piece of skull out and drill below and go through my eye socket. Dr seems very confident but still makes me nervous as hell. Just like to hear your thoughts on recovery.
