Head injury

I don't write very often, I had an aneurysm 4 years ago and had coiling done. I was in a car accident this morning and hit my head really hard. I went to my family doctor this afternoon because I was just worrying about my coils. spoke with neurosurgeons office and that is what she recommended. I think it is just me worrying and the doctor didn't find anything wrong. Has anyone had anything like this happen to them? any advise? I guess I am just looking for reassurance that all is well

Hi Betty,

About 4 months after my coiling I was getting out of a vehicle and my head involuntarily snapped up and hit the door frame with such tremendous force, that I bit a hole in my tongue - however, except for pain right across the bridge of my skull due to the force of the blow, it did not affect the coiling that was done.

This involuntary snapping of my head continued for quite a few months before it just disappeared as mysteriously as it appeared and in that time, I had knocked my head plenty of times.

Perhaps I was just lucky to have no lasting affects or that it did not affect my coiling procedure.

I would go with what the neurosurgeons advised :)

Dear BETTY - it is natural to worry in your situation. I know that after my craniotomy, I was very conscious about my head, and thought that the slightest bump would cause my head to fall apart. In your case there is probably no reason to worry, but I can understand your concern. The best person to ask is the doctor who put the coils in. He or she should know the answer to your questions. But I think time will make you relax more about what was done to you. God bless.

Hey Betty,

This just happened to me the other day. It's natural to be worried. I had my coiling procedure done only six weeks ago then I fell and banged my head. I had a scan done just to be sure but they assured me even before the scan it was very unlikely something was wrong. The doctor said not to forget that the aneurysm is essentially fixed and it's like any other person falling and knocking their head.

Be safe and don't worry.

Thanks,

Sarah

About 7 months after my coiling, I was driving in the freeway when a car ran into me trying to avoid from another car hitting him. The Ct Scan was normal and my neurosurgeon reviewed it, he said everything was stable with my coilings and my pipeline sfent done before my coilings not to mention the 3rd untreafed annie pending!
if your primary doctor along with your neurosurgeon said every looks good…why worry? They are the only ones that can tell you whether there were consequences to your bump. Try to relax and let your bump heal. Don’t relate it wiith your coilings. Best wishss

I hit head against the shower wall, against the freezer door etc etc, all is well. Will you be getting a mra soon? I get yearly mra I will pray for you~

I had a seizure, a few months after I came home from the hospital, fell and bumped my head in a doorway, so hard that it bled!

BUT....the coils were/are fine. Bet yours are too.

My daughter suffered major concussion after a falling straight back and slamming her head on the tile floor 7 weeks after coiling and another concussion after a fall down a flight of stairs 3 weeks later.
They did 3 CT scans and spinal tap and was cleared. Her recovery was set back. She recently suffered a bad headache and sore neck. ER again. CT showed no damaged to coiled Annie or her 2 others. Wanted to do another spinal but husband said she was down 4 days last time so they did a scan with dye and released her. If she gets a headache again, she is to return immediately!
As of yesterday she was doing great!

oh ok, I read your story deedee

I had a craniotomy for my aneurysms 3.5 years ago. (I also have an active cerebral AVM.) I was in a car accident in mid-December. I didn't hit my head, but the airbags did deploy. I went ahead & took an ambulance ride to the e.r.

I was seen by a nurse practitioner in the e.r. Since I wasn't presenting w/ any neuro deficits, he prescribed some muscle relaxers & vicodin for the muscle soreness in my neck. I took the prescriptions that night, took Advil the next day and prescriptions again at bedtime. I had a mild migraine later that week, but that is normal during finals week. Other than a little muscle soreness and bruising from the shoulder strap seat belt and the under the steering wheel airbag, I've been fine. No neuro issues.

Thank you everyone. Just hearing from someone who has gone through the same thing as I have and had a "bump" on their head has made me feel much better. The doctor feels everything is fine. Once you have lived through this its always in the back of your mind. What if's Again Thanks

I had a coiling 8 years ago and was in a car accident this fall with a major whiplash. Didn’t seem to cause any trouble with the coiling but treatment was slower because my neuro surgeon didn’t want any aggressive neck adjustments done, saying they could cause blood surges that could be detrimental. Been the months now and still having trouble with neck and headaches.

Yes 3 years after coiling I fell down basement steps hit my head and was knocked out, well a few months later the Doc's found my coil had occluded (split) had to have it re-coiled and stents put at base of it to hold it in. Howevwer my anuerysm is in Baisler Artery and was a big one to begin with. Just make sure they do an MRA or CT to check it good.....Hope and Pray you are doing well....

Good Morning Betty, I had coiling a few ears ago and also had a shunt, I often bump my head just on the shunt. It protrudes a bit and I probably don't anticipate my head with that extra bump in height. I asked the neurosurgeon if it was a problem that I do bump, he didn't inquire about it just said it is not good to bump it often. He didn't ask what the frequency was. I'd estimate it happens several times a week. I'm bumping it when I get into cupboards, fridge, car, at times that require me to lower my head and neck to access another area. It smarts a bit, but the doc didn't seem that surprised, and did not ask questions.
