Hi all,
For those that had an aneurysm burst and coil embolization, how long after coiling did you fly? And did you experience any discomfort during flight?
I had mine in mid December and am a little nervous to fly.
Thanks in advance.

Hi there, I ruptured around the same time of year as you and then travelled the following March. Was pretty nervous but there was no notable difference in flight. I did check with my surgeon in advance and got the green light to go. I do recall pausing before going through the scanner wondering if the coils would set it off lol, no they do not btw.
I ruptured and had my second coiling about six months later. After my third repair attempt, I flew the next week, so less than five days. My Neurosurgeon cleared me to fly after the second I believe it was, we did fly but I don’t remember how long afterwards. Right after my rupture, I was having an incredible difficulty with noise and lights so flying wasn’t even thought of, it was all I could do to go out to breakfast with friends. When I told the folks at the metal detector that I had hardware in my spine and brain, they used the wand.
I appreciate your reply. I’m very happy to hear you did not experience any notable difference. I was clear to fly a month after coiling. But I was still having bad headaches which have recently greatly improved. I’m an avid traveler and am eager to fly again.
Hi Moltroub, Thanks for your response and assistance getting this topic added.
Noise and lights were definitely a factor for me as well. I often wore ear plugs to help. Occasionally, lights and noise still bother me. But, it’s getting better. Thanks for the metal detector tip for security. My neuro said I have platinum coils which should not cause any issues with airport metal detectors. But, I think I’ll let TSA know anyway.
I only had the wand used once after my spine and brain surgeries and it was at Reagan. Charlotte was fine and I went through with no problems. Before my surgeries we flew from Charlotte to Albuquerque for a nice stay up in Santa Fe back in 2009 or 2010. I wore the same clothes back home as I did to NM. The metal detector went off like a banshee in Albuquerque. Faster than I can type, I was surrounded by TSA folks and escorted over to the side for the wand, patted down, removed my shoes and thought they were going to strip search me. They weren’t very pleasant is all I can say. Of course anything I said wasn’t received well and my repeated question on why Charlotte didn’t have an issue. When one guy told me to shut up, I almost lost my temper. Fortunately, the big boss came over and asked why they kept me when the wand wasn’t going off. He did answer my question and said it may have to do with the sensitivity of the machine. I told him the next time I flew out of NM, I’d wear sweats and crocs😂
Hi Christina.
I flew 2 months after cooking back in 2018 and had eye mask and noise cancelling headphones that helped so much. I now fly up to 5 times a year - keep hydrated and if you suffer from headaches, a flexible ticket may be a better option if you are not feeling great as you have the option to change.
