That’s exciting news! Can’t wait to read all you do there, besides having access to great food of course. I am curious, when you travel abroad, do you go with a tour group like the Smithsonian Journeys, Road Scholar, Oversee Adventures or do you bypass the groups altogether?

Sounds amazing! Greece is a beautiful country and has some of the best food. Wishing you safe travels and lots of fun!

No group, just a few old friends who are bored, in their 60s, and ready for some fun
My next post might be asking for some bail money! (LOL just kidding) I’ll share my adventures when I get back. One of my best friends has a house on the Island of Paros in Greece that we’ll be staying at. She knows all the ins and outs and summers there. Should be a great trip! Food is amazing, I’m Greek so I know the cuisine, and the wine of course is amazing.

Sounds like a great trip! Yes on the Greek wine! We can’t get it around my parts, but we went to a wine tasting dinner several years back and they had some. I really liked it, a lot. If you were in my drivable part of NC, I’d bail you out. Greece, yep not able to drive there lol. You’d be in a long time, I don’t have a passport yet. Best not to count on me, so don’t get into trouble :joy:

No worries, I’m sure I won’t need bail $$ but it’s always good to know that for wine I can count on you. LOL My favorite Greek wine is Retsina. It is made from the resin of pine trees. The lore goes that the Romans would come into the Greek village and rape their women, and drink their wine. So they developed a wine made from the resin of pine and over the years they acquired a taste for it. Then when the Romans came back, they took their women, and wine. But after that they never came back.. Said that the wine was terrible and not worth a return.

So I have to admit to loving Greece – I have been to many of the islands – but I’m with the Romans on resinated wine!! :joy:

Paros is lovely: I went in 1995 and again in 2000 and perhaps Naoussa is my favourite place. We had a superb meal in a whitewashed courtyard on both occasions. I’ve tried to plot where it was on a map but much has changed in the last 25-30 years!

Παρέκκλιση Άγιος Νικόλαος, in the harbour at Naoussa: an elderly fisherman mending his net in the shade of the chapel. This is one of my best photos from 1995, hence having it to hand, and to me beautifully reminiscent of any of the islands of Greece.

Have a great time!

I need to add that to the wines to try list! I love the smell of fresh cut pine and when we burn it in the fireplace. We’ve learned over the years that different pines smell differently so I imagine it would be the same for taste. Do you have a favorite maker? Thanks for the history, very smart of the Greeks to find away to deal with the Romans!

I have tried a few Retsina from different makers, I do like the Kourtaki Retsina so far the best.
Enjoy!

A beautiful photo, my Grandfather lived on the island of Lesvos and he loved to fish. It is indeed a great photo. Thank you for sharing.

Found some Retsina in a really cute wine/coffee/beer/loose leaf tea store the other day up in Morganton. Plan to try it this weekend. The owner is going to Greece next week and took down the winery’s name so she could look for it. Your oyster is growing in rural NC! She also sells my favorite coffee - Kona!

Thavmásios is the Greek word for wonderful. It’s all Greek to me, as they say. Everything was perfect, weather, good friends, wine. What more could I ask for, I’m alive! right?

Most definitely! I don’t know how to do the accent over letters but I can copy and paste . Thavmásios! And of course most things are Greek to me. Haven’t tried the wine yet, I was put back on my pain medication and I won’t mix alcohol with them. I am looking forward to trying it.
