Ear whooshing

I’m afraid. Had ruptured Brain Aneurysm in August of 2007. Crainiotomy with clip repair
Recently developed wooshing in my left ear ( aneurysm was right frontal lobe ).
Did mention this to new PCP ( we moved to different state, husband retired so all new physicians….. Medicare now ) new doctor didn’t seem to be concerned but this is over a month now. Balance has always been a problem but seems worse now.
Always worry people think I over think

I’d say talk to your doctor about something called “pulsatile tinnitus” and “dural arteriovenous fistula”. I had both: the DAVF was the thing that was making the noise (but it was a good thing because it meant that I went to the doc about it).

I got dizzier as well.

It took me 4 months to see an ENT who immediately recognised an arteriovenous malformation or specifically a DAVF. It took another three months for me to get referred successfully to neurosurgery and then a further five months to have a catheter embolization procedure to glue up the naughty connection. That is now over 8 years ago.

Am AVM is a rogue connection between an artery and a vein. A DAVF is a rogue connection between an artery and one of the major draining sinuses of the head, so mine connected to my right transverse sinus. The whooshing was the sound of the arterial pressure blood scooting through the transverse sinus and into the sigmoid sinus that goes past your ear(s).

There are other causes for pulsatile tinnitus as well, though, so it may not be an AVM / DAVF.

If you get a confirmation of AVM or DAVF, I have a whole other support forum with people in the same situation, just let me know and I’ll point you there.

Hope this may be a help.

Very best wishes,

Richard

Debbie, I’d get a referral to an ENT if you need one. Since I saw my ENT before I ruptured, I didn’t need referrals but my PCP does one anyways to make sure I get in faster. Interestingly enough, I had some pulsing tinnitus also prior to rupture and mentioned it to my allergist who thought my allergies were the cause of it and gave me a prescription for some old timey allergy meds that took care of it. Post rupture, the ENT told me the horrible tinnitus I had couldn’t be treated. The rupture also made my hearing improve too much LOL. Once again my wonderful PCP stepped up and suggested an oscillating fan that clicks. It worked! I love simple fixes.

Happy 4th of July, stay safe!

I decided to go to an ER clinic. Of all things it turned out to be a ruptured eardrum with an infection. Ordered meds and it took almost a month finally healed but I’ll be taking an appointment with an ENT to find out why this occurred.

I thank you for your responses and the point to get it checked out

Great news @Debbie4

Did you accidentally poke to deep in your ear with a Q-tip? We can damage our eardrums if we are not careful. Just a thought…..
