I had my aneurysm repaired on March 17th by DrMichael Lawton at UCSF Medical Center using clips. There was a perforator (small artery) branching from the back of the aneurysm. He, basically, surrounded it with two clips so was able to save it. A small part of the aneurysm is left but is not expected to ever be a problem.
The Interventionalist that I consulted felt he would have to sacrifice a small artery that branched off the basilar artery below the aneurysm due to placement of the stents. The perforator found by Dr Lawton would also have been sacrificed. I’m sure I would have had cognitive deficits, as well as motor weakness. At minimum. As it is, i feel normal. I’m driving and waiting for the bones to heal so I can restart yoga.
For my aneurysm, clipping was clearly the better choice. I would advise anyone with an unruptured aneurysm to look into all options before making a decision.
Linda...it is magnificent...ohhh, and I, with no expertise, am such a promoter of clips... Recently, I also heard excellent data on the quality of Dr. Lawton...you were blessed to have made his connection. I am so excited for you...and, for bringing this data available to others.
Thank you for sharing your wonderful results...hope we can share more later...
I am truly blessed to live in an area adjacent to San Francisco and Dr. Lawton. He is the best! And with no discernible god complex and with a great sense of humor. I was a bit put off by the interventionalist saying "he" could sacrifice an artery. Yes, you sacrifice the artery and I'll live with the results!!!
Hey...sacrificing an artery can be highly profitable...more devices?... you snagged my humor...I was coiled...there are two "visualized / imaged" stents...off-label and off-record...except for the billing (CPTs)...tho interesting chapters..
We have several basilar survivors...I have strong prayers they will connect w/you...and, I am sitting in wonder (dancing?)of potential surgery to overcome/correct the minimally invasive procedures...Only time will tell...
Hi Linda. Thanks for sharing your success! I had contacted Dr. Lawton as well. I ultimately chose to have my bypass surgery w/ UCLA. Lawton suggested clipping and plan A, plan B would be bypass.
It was a hard decision to make. Nonetheless, Im glad you're doing well!
Hi Linda...I must agree with you...I had a 9mm basilar artery aneurysm coiled 3 years ago...I had and have many complications ... coming due for another Angiogram ... and praying it is occluded...I am glad you are doing well...but you are early in the healing journey...be sure to continue to rest and take care of YOU...Continued Healing ~ Colleen
