Aphasia

Just wondering. If you have aphasia, Has it gotten better? stayed the same? or gotten worse?

It does get better. I have found when I am tired it gets worse.

Hi louisa. Mine is very mild. At times I will have diffuculty using a word, or a phrase. Its in my mind, but it wont come out. I found that being tired, stressed, or not feeling well magnifies the problem. I Have not had therapy for this. I mention this to my nuerosurgeon whenever I see him. He says I talk better than him, LOL.

I find that if I slow down and think of what im trying to say or express it helps me. But the last several months I seem to be stumbling over words more. I have even asked those that I supervise at work, and my family not to finish sentences for me

my mother in-law had a aneurysm the size of a lime removed about 2 years ago and she has aphasia and apraxia... and neither one has really improved at all! she still really has no speech except for a few words. I wish there was something that could be done for her!!! she is young only 65

I have not heard of this condition until today. After looking it up, I have not have any issues with it. Hopefully you can find more people here that can help. Good luck.

Mine is very mild, however, it does become more significant when I’m tired or stressed

Mine has gotten better. Initially it was quite severe. I had significant issues with expressive and receptive language and reading and writing. Now, it is very mild. People have no idea I have aphasia. Occasionally I say things but mean something else, and reading and writing is still more difficult, but it has gotten significantly better.

Hi irene. How long have you had Aphasia?

It's been a year and a half since my B.A./Stroke and Aphasia & Apraxia. First it was so hard, now mine is the top of mild. My doc told me about two years would be good and after I will be 70-80% for my speech/language. I can talk small words, wrong words, no big words, little writing, I can't sing my music:), but hey... I still like my music! Anyway, I go to my Speech Therapy Tues & Thurs for an hour. Soon, I won't go anymore but I will forget so I have to tell my self how to do it. Speech will help you and let us know how you feel better with it.

I had a double brain aneurysm. My language has completely improved and I am constantly writing and relearning words, phrases and structure. Practice, practice. I read aloud to my children from their 1st and 2nd grade books. You have to start somewhere. It does come back. Hang on.

Do you still have speech therapy even a year and 1/2 after?

I had my bleed in 2008. At times I do have trouble finding the words to speak but it has become better over the years.

I didnt realize there were so many of us that had Aphasia in some form. I know there are four types of Aphasia. Im glad to hear that time and patience helps.

Yep. August would be two years and I will be done.

Mine was in 2010, I still sometimes can see the word but takes a minute to come out. Time and patience. God takes care of us all.

she was only given speech therapy for about 6 months and then nothing... I don't know if the combination of both aphasia and apraxia made it not worth more therapy?? it is sooo frustrating for her!!

Yeah, that's not far. Did it not help her medical insurance?

she had what medicare would cover... it helped a bit, but I don't know if it should have continued?? if medicare does not see a certain amount of improvement then the coverage stops....

Every three months Tricare takes a test until I'm done and it helps me. Soon my test would be good enough. I wish she does it again. I'm sorry it rough.
