Anyone successful using depakote for migraine prevention?

so I am transitioning from headache specialist at Stanford where my annie was treated to local neurologist and she wants to switch me from the Namenda XR to depakote for prevention of a type of migraine call persistent visual aura.

Anyone have success with depakote? Have read a lot of the patient reviews and very few have anything good thing to say.

You feedback is appreciated.

Laura

Personally, I am not a fan of Depakote. I was on that for about two months and was relieved to get off of it. It made me very tired and just felt like my head was in a fog most of the time. I do not want to discourage you from trying it as you may react differently than I did. I wish you luck.

Laura...I was first put on gabapentin (Neurontin?) by my first neurologist...was so sick from it, that was stopped. He then wanted me to take Depakote...I did not get it...however, I do not know if I decided not to or if I forgot the prescription once I was out of his office...or I may have read the worstpills.org data (under Public Citizen). That was my memory status back then...far from normal yet... I have used a lot of acupuncture and craniosacral therapy/other vs pills.

Did your new local doc explain why they prefer to promote Depakote to Namenda?

Namenda fascinates me...as it is geared at (designed for?) Alzheimer's disease (AD) as a help to slow AD advancement...I have known, yet know, those w/AD...and/or their spouse/other family members w/AD.

How did Stanford decide to use it for a migraine? I do not remember my friends talking about migraine of their family member/AD.

We have a lot of us who have had/have the migraines...expect you will get a lot of response...I do not know (my memory) if there is a "migraine" group.

Yes there is a group - aneurysms and migraines. It’s on pg 2 of groups today. Laura K. My neurologist did a lot of testing with me and meds until we settled on a procedure that helped. It was an SPG block. I have also discovered that even 18 months post rupture I still have to follow my routine or pay the consequences  though it helped tremendously for me, it wasn’t the end all be all. If you’re concerned about the Depakote, talk to your Dr, in my experience this works best.

Thanks for the replies. After discussion with PCP we decided to stay away from the depakote and stick with the Namenda XR. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

Good philosophy Laura!
