My wife has done great and is walking with just a little help from myself and workers. The short term memory was not improving and I asked about the drug Amantadine. We started her on it yesterday, 100mg in morning and 100mg at bedtime. I wondered if anyone can tell how long it will take to start working and what should we be looking for in the future. June 14th will be one year since brain aneurysm. I have read but want to hear from people that have used this drug. Thanks from Maine, "Big Jon".
Jon,
Can you elaborate why amantadine was prescribed as it does not appear appropriate for memory issues. I understand it is used for Parkinsons and for some muscle stiffness issues.
Ed
Hi BigJon,
Amantidine was first thought to be beneficial in flu serums.....(but not this years flu), and at one time it was thought to help with Parkinsons Disease related issues (this is no longer thought to help in Parkinsons Disease however)...
Amantidine is sometimes used in conjunction with anti-depresents...as it will effect the central nervous system to one degree or another (dry mouth, nervousness, sweating)..as for memory related issues, i have no clue if Amantidine would be considered helpful or not. Is your wife seeing a Neurologist for her memory problems? have other drugs affecting ones memory been prescribed thus far, such as Aricept or Namenda?
My mom started amantadine 10 days ago and the changes after 48 hours were remarkable. However she went from being barely verbal to being a talking machine. She is doing a lot of confabulation right now, however ( making up facts that she swears are true) but I am told this should stop after about a month. My mom had her Annie March 31, by the way. All the best to you and your wife!
CJ, great to hear about mom. I sent a friend request and would like to compare notes. The workers with my wife(06-14-13 was her brain aneurysm) document everything since she started med. Leave a message please. Jon
hi, my husband has had serious memory loss since his ruptured annie on Nov 8-2013, please continue to share how this amantadine is working. It's been really hard on my kids 18, and 25 when they talk about significant memories/times we've share and he can't remember any of it, will he ever remember those memories?
